ON AUGUST 21, Army Specialist Ernesto Godoy, 25, and four other soldiers were traveling in a Humvee near Dai Chopan, Afghanistan, when a bomb that had been hidden in the road exploded beneath them. Wounded and burned from head to toe, Godoy was in so much pain that medics put him into a medically induced coma (state of unconsciousness) for eight days. He awoke at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio on August 29. Doctors there amputated both his legs below the knee. Sitting in his wheelchair in the Brooke physical therapy center, Godoy's voice grows quiet. "Those, other four guys in the Humvee with me--they all died," he told Current Science. "That's the only thing that's hard about this." For someone who has lost both legs in the prime of life, that's a remarkable statement. But Godoy does indeed have much going for him.
