(09/14/10) Product Description Between the first decade of the 20th century, when women were still locked into figure-shaping corsets, to the last years of the millennium, when sexy sweats and low-rise jeans became must-have status items, fashion evolved from a luxury enjoyed by the highest echelon of society to a global business that whisks trends off the runway and into the stores before the last supermodel has left the catwalk. From full skirts to miniskirts and morning coats to leisure suits, men's and women's clothing design evolved so rapidly that it was all one could do to keep up and stay in style. Each decade is now associated with definable fashions, short-lived fads and signature silhouettes. And in recent decades, retro has become de rigueur, as designers continually recycle the past for modern-day inspiration. Featuring over 500 ads from the Jim Heimann Collection, these fashion advertisements from 1900 to 1999 give readers a stylish retrospective on the century that defined,...See less

(09/29/10) Product Description A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day. Early in the century fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the '60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques. About the Author Cally Blackman is a writer and lecturer with degrees in Fashion Design and History of Art, and an MA in History of Dress from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. She teaches the Fashion History and Theory course at Central Saint Martins College. Her previous publications include Costume: From 1500 to...See less

(09/14/10) Amazon.com Review Second in a series of books featuring advertising by era, All-American Ads of the 50s offers page after page of products that made up the happy-days decade. The start of the cold war spurred a buying frenzy and a craze for new technology that required ad campaigns to match. The nuclear age left its mark all over the advertisements, with a spotlight on planes, rockets, and even mushroom clouds. Shiny, big, beautiful cars abound, styled to keep up with the space age. Editor Jim Heimann, in his essay "From Poodles to Presley, Americans Enter the Atomic Age," explains: "Car designers came up with exaggerated tail fins for automobiles to express this new accelerated speed." Modernist home interiors look slick and shiny with their molded plastic furniture and linoleum floors. While clothing and furniture styles look strangely contemporary--a testament to our current obsession with vintage--some things have definitely changed. A baby sells Marlboro cigarettes! (01/25/12) If fashion is your addiction, meet your quick fix. This book is beautiful, accessible and comprehensive. For all students, followers, trend-setters of fashion design and style, it would make a wonderful addition to your library. It must be stated that the book is more a look into American fashion designers, from the end of the 1920's to 2007, than American fashion itself. After all, the book is published by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The best way to analogize how this fact affects the book is to compare it to a history of American Cinema, published by the American Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar-awarding organization.) This absolutely colors, biases and focuses the approach the book follows into what is by definition a vast subject. Throughout, it places the designer as the determining and dictating factor of style within the culture. Whether it makes a good argument for this is up to you to decide... Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that this...See less

(07/26/11) From Publishers Weekly Basque-born Cristobal Balenciaga, one of the leading couturiers of this century, found his metier in dress design early, spurred by his mother's work as a dressmaking teacher. Encouraged further by a noblewoman's interest in his talents, Balenciaga, aged 24, opened his first couture house in 1919. Journalist Demornex and Balenciaga archivist Jouve trace the development of his long career, which endured until the master's retirement in 1971, a year before his death. Balenciaga's famous draping technique, inspired by the paintings of Zurbaran, led to the creation of fantastic silhouettes (Colette, Marlene Dietrich and the Duchess of Windsor were among his clients), exemplified in evening dresses with enormous, jutting shoulders or full skirts bunched at calf level. Another trademark was lavishly ornamented fabric, such as a black muslin crisscrossed with ruched black lace. An informative text and 600 illustrations--200 in color, 190 in duotone--remind us of...See less

(09/14/10) From Booklist How to connect a famous Spanish-French couturier with exhibits at the University of North Texas? Via Dallas-based department store founder Stanley Marcus and family and a prominent local socialite who spearheaded, first, a multipronged collection. Curator Myra Walker narrates, through interviews with Balenciaga descendants, students such as Hubert de Givenchy, and donor biographies, the life and times of an artist who shunned the concept of ready-to-wear clothing for women. Elegant photographs from the lenses of Richard Avedon and Horst P. Horst, among others, not only pay homage to timeless designs--his tailored T-shirt tunic, for instance--but also contrast copycat styles from the houses of Courreges, de la Renta, and Ungaro. Tales delight, whether it's Caroline Heard de Osborne's memory of a Peggy Guggenheim party or the first vendeuse/salesperson hired by Cristobal Balenciaga. (05/21/12) "People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone." —Audrey Hepburn In his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby took iconic photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, but remains unequivocal about his favorite subject: Audrey Kathleen Ruston, later Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, best known as Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. "She took my hand like...well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men's hearts," he recalled. As Hepburn's career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and...See less
