French women are known for wearing scarves. Starting in September and until summer arrives, this is a most important accessory. The scarf may be striped or patterned, colorful, wrinkled and is much bigger than the scarves you probably have. Women just wrap the scarf around their neck in a "Je suis belle et ça ne demande aucun effort*" sort of way and off they go. Since I have lived in Paris, I have realized that these ladies are on to something. I find I am much warmer wearing a scarf, even if I’m not wearing a jacket, so here is my knit version of the French scarf. It’s knit on the bias so the variegated yarn makes diagonal stripes and stitches are carefully dropped to make a pattern in the opposite direction. This creates a scarf which tends to be a little more of a parallelogram than a rectangle, but I promise, it’s nice that way. This is the continental version of the purl stitch. Most people find it the fastest method. Insert right needle from right to left through the front loop (nearest you) of the stitch on the left needle. Keep the yarn in your left hand at the front of the needles. Lay the yarn over the right needle from front to back. A very common mistake is to lay the yarn from back to front and pick it; if you do this, your stitches will be twisted. Hold the yarn taut and with the tip of the right needle, pull the yarn through and keep it on the right needle. Remove the stitch from the left needle. Proceed to the next stitch. See less

This "winter cap", with its combination of Scandanavian color-stranded patterns, Icelandic wool and Peruvian style ear flaps, ought to keep out most artic blasts. Remember: Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær. [There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.] The inspiration comes from a similar hat I glimpsed on a commercial for Discovery Europe. There was a fellow speaking Russian holding a giant teddy bear, a lady speaking what might have been Dutch while staring at a stuffed fish, and a tall blonde lady, speaking what I think was Swedish, pulling on a pointy cap with ear flaps and color patterns. Her cap had a braid coming from the point at the top, so feel free to add one! See less
