(04/17/08) I purchased this extender so that I could be more comfortable looking through the viewfinder. 5/8ths of an inch doesn't seem like a whole lot but it is enough to put some space between your face and the camera. To install, you remove the eyepiece cushion from the camera, slip on the extender and then reattach the eyepiece cushion to the extender. It does reduce the magnification in the viewfinder, but not enough to be an issue for me. The extenders can be purchased with your eye glass prescription strength in mind so one doesn't need to wear their glasses when using the camera. This particular extender does not correct vision. This extender stays on my camera at all times. PROS: Gives your nose some breathing room. CONS: Reduces magnification in the viewfinder. Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (04/17/08) I brought this book based on good review here and read it through. I found some mistakes, also disapointed for not going to details in other chapters or not talking some important things in photography. But I think for people never taking picture before, this is a good book to introduce photograph to them. Now, I like to pointed one obvious mistake when author talked about the lens F/x.x aperture number. He said that F actually means 1. That is wrong. F means the focus length. The aperture number is an indication how much light can get through the lens. A f/2.8 lens will allow more light through than a f/3.5 lens when they have the same focus length. For build a compact camera, most manufactures try to build smaller and lighter camera. When you select a camera, select bigger aperture number on the lens will enable you take picture at lower light. When author explains in the book why smaller pocket size camera has deeper field range, he also failed to explain that smaller pocket size...See less

(04/17/08) Like the previous reviewer, I purchased this book mainly to look at some Hubble photographs. Unlike the previous reviewer, I found much more to like about it. Photos provided are not just from Hubble but from a variety of different ground-based and orbiting telescopes. Some are rather dated, many are indeed beautiful, and ALL of them are interesting to look at. And each one is accompanied by often detailed descriptions of their content and on how the photos were taken; whether from visible light, infrared, or x-ray telescopes. The book's topics proceed logically from a brief, illustrated history of astrophotography; through a tour of our solar system; through a description of different types of stars, nebulas, and star clusters; through our Milky Way and beyond to distant galaxies; and finally to glimpses of the more distant parts of our universe courtesy of the Hubble Telescope. Though there are no ground breaking revelations here, I think there is a nice balance between the number...See less

(04/17/08) I expected a large portion of the book to be on scope control and image acquisition. In reality only the last chapter is on that topic and the majority of the book is on astronomy through the web and through custom software. As such this is an excellent field guide to desktop astronomy. Organized like a trip through the solar system and into the universe the book contains multitudes of links and references to points around the web and custom software. The illustrations are primarily screenshots of the software. Given the content on the book I think more attention could have been paid to organization. The embedding of hundreds of URLs makes the text hard to read. However, that doesn't negate the fact that there a lot of research has gone into making this a comprehensive guide to what is available for computer astronomy. Well worth the look for the look for the amateur astronomer or particularly for teachers looking to find online resources for their courses. Comment | Was this review...See less

(04/17/08) I've been trying my hand off and on for the last year at astrophotography with my Meade LX-200. In that time I've scoured the internet, devoured newsgroup, and emailed enough astrophotographers that you'd think I was trying to get elected to NASA or something. In all that time, one name and reference guide kept coming up as a "must have". Astrophotography for the Amateur by Michael A. Covington. Everywhere I turned, everyone I asked, their answers always seemed to come down to "...because Michael Covington does it this way" or "Yeah I tried doing it that way but after reading Astrophotography I tried it this way and received better results". That attitude actually "put me off" this book. Here I wanted to learn how to do astrophotography, not follow some recipe in a book. After finally browsing through a friends copy I was immediately impressed with the book as a reference guide, and when comparing it to my own notes and conclusions found several area's where I had erred, resulting in...See less

(04/17/08) If you are looking for an easier to read manual of the Canon EOS 2000, this is the book for you. If you are a novice wanting to learn about photography, forget about it. I bought the Canon EOS 2000 because I wanted to learn to take professional pictures yet have the automatic features so I can take "good" pictures while I am learning. I expected this book to help me make the jump from using the automatic features to using the camera in the manual mode. In other words, I expected to learn something about photography. Unfortunately, this book did not help. The book does a reasonable job of explaining the different automatic modes and situations where they should be used. It also provides information about how to change the settings of the camera and some basic information about how you can take better pictures. At the same time though, it does not teach anything about photography. I guess they assume that someone wanting to know about the manual settings is already versed in photography...See less

(04/17/08) Book Description Almost all amateur astronomers want to take photographs of the night sky. For all but the simplest star-trail pictures, this involves machinery - a telescope drive - to track the stars, essential to compensate for the rotation of the earth. The task becomes even more complicated when photographing very small or very faint objects that require high magnification or very long exposure times. Amateurs have many options according to their requirements, technical ability, and budget. Astrophotography for Amateurs looks at all the possibilities, including normal ("wet") photography, CCD imaging, and modern techniques of computer enhancement. There are sections about photographing different classes of astronomical object from the Moon to faint nebulae, as well as a thorough look at the equipment needed. (04/17/08) My third year of owning this great night time aid has only increased my appreciation of what lies above. This book has great reference guides for planetary location, eclipse tables, lunar maps, and enough material for the person observing with binicoulars (which I started out with), to someone with an intermediate telescope (I moved up to a 6" reflector because I wanted to see more of what is presented). The lay-out of the book is very straight forward, and any one may pick it up and begin to locate everything pictured. Owners of small refracter telescopes will find renewed interest in what they will be able to view with the help of this book. A must have companion if you starting out, an old friend as time goes by. (04/17/08) Prospective buyers of a macro lens for a Canon EOS system can't make a better first choice than this 100mm Macro. The extra length over a 50mm macro gives much better working distance (space between lens and subject) in the field, and EOS-compatible lenses by other manufacturers match poorly with accessories and are nowhere near as sharp. Compared with the earlier Micro motor 100mm Macro that Canon made (which I also own), the USM lens focuses *very* fast. The USM lens also can accept a tripod collar (by use of a small plastic adapter)--I recommend you buy the collar with the lens, as adjusting to a vertical composition with a tripod means repositioning everything. The front element is not recessed in the USM model, which makes lens cleaning easier. And build quality is improved--the earlier model was prone to its switches breaking (could fix it yourself with the ordered part, but really annoying) and eventually the Micro motor gearing gave out (no trouble so far with the USM ring...See less

(04/17/08) I bought this lens four years ago and have shot around 6,000 photos with it (4000 digital, 2000 35mm). Autofocus is very fast and quiet, which is typical of the Canon USM lenses. I would not recommend a Canon lens that does not have the ultrasonic motor (USM) focusing. Optics are sharp throughout the focusing range. The lens is fairly heavy and after a few months of use, you will likely find that the weight of the glass is enough to make the lens telescope out when it's around your neck. If you want a compact lens that will let you take great pictures in a wide range of settings, this is probably the best lens you could get for a Canon camera. If you're a pro, you'll probably have a backpack full of lenses and you're not reading this anyway, so I'm not talking to you. If you want something you can sling over your shoulder and not think about when you take the kids to Disney World, get a cheaper, lighter lens. The Image Stabilizer (IS) makes the lens a lot more expensive (some lenses...See less
