But while we’re dipping our toes into still-cold water and chasing little ones who aren’t bothered by the temperature, we need to keep in mind the footprints that we’re leaving behind in the sand—carbon footprints, that is. Beachgoing is a popular excursion this time of year, and even with high gas prices, an estimated 10 million Americans will travel to the beach or waterfront this year (AAA). And that’s a pretty big carbon footprint! Getting to the beach by public transportation or a bicycle can be hard with kids and coolers in tow, so instead it’s better for us to reduce our carbon footprint in the sand by other means.
