It's so hysterical. Sloane Tanen is a visual artist in New York City. She makes these little shadow boxes with plastic chickens that live out modern day situations, both normal and fantastical. In one, a chick is sitting on a bed facing a little frog, who is wearing a crown. The caption reads "Anastasia was through making out with Ian. He was never going to change." In another, a bug eyed chick sits on a horse facing a large plastic dragon while a princess chick looks on. "Princess Gwyneth's money was on Puff." So. Hilarious. It's my coffee table book. The information was outdated in many obvious areas (e.g. instructions to use "diskettes" and make sure that the gallery has computer access before sending digital materials) and perhaps in areas that I don't know are outdated... That said, it was a good top-level info tool, providing basic categories of consideration (exhibiting, outreach, marketing, commission, etc) and TONS of follow-up resources. Half of the book is resource index, in fact. I've already ordered the most recent edition. See less

The Shim Hanga movement started in the early twentieth century, but interestingly, it was an effort by its adherents to revive an older style of woodblock called 'ukiyo-e' and merge it with more contemporary methods and imagery. The muted colors of the Japanese art are shown here in all of their glory. They convey a sense of delicacy, and attention to detail by not letting the medium overwhelm the imagery. If you're an art history lover, or merely a fan of Japanese art, you will undoubtedly love this book. Part of the problem in decoding his shocking and richly allegorical paintings is that virtually nothing is known of the artist himself, apart from his birthplace. Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world", ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western worlds visual characterization of Japan. Though Hiroshige captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his most famous work was a series known as "100 Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858). Or if you were an artist who was pushing the boundaries and showing up your contemporaries. Carravagio, or Michelangelo Merisi was such an artist. Peter Robb has used every bit of the available evidence and M's own work to create a biography that reads like a thriller, written in a quick contemporary style, which makes the reader realise how difficult it must have been to please all the powers in the Rome of the day. In your face describes both Peter Robb's style and M's life. The reader is asked to share the writer's excitement and enthusiasm in a book which is a dialogue between writer and reader. The paintings are wonderful, the story is exciting. A great read. See less
