(07/11/11) this is what we are learning, day by day, about oak park’s positions. they clearly have an agenda, and we think we’ve figured it out. we’ve distilled it down to the basics, in case anyone from the city government needs to understand it: 1. criminals -good. innocent people -bad. 2. ugly flowers and overgrown weeds- good. vegetable plants -bad. 3. pit bulls guarding drug houses -good. tame, friendly, vaccinated dogs- bad. 4. tacky lawn plant arrays -good. neat, tidy, food-producing plants- very bad. 5. city officials being hard to get in touch with, and often hard to track down-good. citizens at home minding their own business- bad.See less

(05/28/11) If you don't like being tethered to an office chair, then you've likely learned to appreciate wi-fi. Ah, the freedom. Work at the coffee shop. Or on the beach. With freedom, however, comes responsibility, right? Like taking responsibility for our carbon emissions, both personal, national and international. If this sounds too preachy, and you're tired of the climate change alarms, just consider one more: A warming planet egged on by human-related emissions of greenhouse gases could affect wi-fi signals. So much for traveling and working from the road or a more relaxing place if this prediction comes to pass. The wi-fi trouble is being predicted by a British government study. If you think polar bears and small island nations are in danger under various climate change scenarios, consider this, from The Guardian:See less

(05/19/11) Let the flame wars begin. I still have friends who are Apple nuts. I used to be one. I moved to a PC years ago. I was tired of being a pioneer. And tired of hearing "the Mac version will be released soon." PCs cost less, they're more widely used, etc. Of course, not everyone agrees on those undeniable points. And I still use an iPhone and an iPad (and Pages doesn't beat Word, by the way). But I digress. The purpose of this post is to share news that Greenpeace says Apple is the dirtiest Information Technology (IT) company. While Newsweek has named Dell as the greenest computer company. PC lovers rejoice? Mac users, hang your heads in shame?See less

(05/19/11) Beside making food delicious, it's believed there are more than 14,000 uses for salt, and our grandmothers were probably familiar with most of them. A number of these uses were for simple things around the home before the advent of modern chemicals and cleaners. Many of these salt uses are still valid today and can be much cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than more sophisticated products. We make no guarantee about the results if you try any of these uses and tips, but there must be something to them since they have been handed down over the years in many households. Most of these salt uses have stood the test of time. The most familiar use of salt undoubtedly is in the kitchen and on the dining table. Salt accents the flavor of meat, brings out the individuality of vegetables, puts "oomph" into bland starches, deepens the flavor of delicate desserts, and develops the flavor of melons and certain other fruits. No other seasoning has yet been found that can satisfactorily take...See less

(04/29/11) What if every piece of food you bought was labeled not just with nutrition information, but with carbon impact specs as well? As inlet's see: this jar of mayo's got 16 grams of fat, 110 milligrams of sodium, and 150 grams of CO2 spewed into the atmosphere on its account. Per serving. That's the conceit behind the Global Warming Diet, which offers a compelling perspective on food miles, method of food distribution, and general greenhouse gases emitted by food production. The website's authors have imagined what such "carbon nutrition" information would look like, and offer this rendering of such a label on a jar of peanut butter. They take into account where the food originated from, how far it traveled to reach you, the method of transportation used in moving it there (truck, train etc,), the amount of emissions generated in producing the plastic jar, and the processing of the food itself. The calculations were done by EcoSynergy, and the results are tallied on a high/low graph. I...See less
