(01/22/12) One of the biggest factors that determines how well you age is not your genes but how well you live. Not convinced? A study published in 2009 in the British Medical Journal of 20,000 British folks shows that you can cut your risk of having a stroke in half by doing the following things: being active for 30 minutes a day, eating five daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and avoiding cigarettes and excess alcohol. While those are some of the obvious steps you can take to age well, researchers have discovered that centenarians tend to share certain traits in how they eat, move about, and deal with stress—the sorts of things we can emulate to improve our own aging process. Of course, getting to age 100 is enormously more likely if your parents did. Still, Thomas Perls, who studies the century-plus set at Boston University School of Medicine, believes that assuming you've sidestepped genes for truly fatal diseases like Huntington's, "there's nothing stopping you from living independently...See less

(04/30/11) Everyone has heard of bisphenol-A by now, or at least seen "BPA free" appearing on everything from baby bottles to camping gear. You may be breathing a sigh of relief to see regulations increasingly banning the suspect chemical, and to find many manufacturers jumping to provide options to minimize BPA exposure. But a new study, Most Plastic Products Release Estrogenic Chemicals, has the web abuzz with concern. Do you need to worry about your little ones from drowning in a sea of scary chemicals? What can you do to keep them safe? Estrogenic chemicals are chemicals that our bodies mistake for the natural hormones in the estrogen family. All humans naturally produce estrogenic hormones, even men -- although at significantly lower levels than in women, where ovaries act as estrogen factories. Estrogen is responsible for many of the body changes that make us women feminine, including breast growth, regulation of the menstrual cycle, and triggering many changes related to pregnancy. (04/29/11) I was reading one of my favorite yoga blogs Everything Yoga and I was thrilled to read about one of my favorite pass times, drinking tea. As I've come to yoga, I've fallen even more in love with tea and all its health benefits. It's a natural cure for a host of ailments. So I decided to take an in depth look at the medicinal qualities of many of the teas I love. You can find a tea to treat whatever ails you. I use whole tea leave teas and I seep them in a French press instead of using tea bags. Tea bags have quite a bit of extra packaging that's just not necessary, and additionally, they're often a lower quality. Just like purchasing nutritional supplements, you'll want to get the good stuff so that it's processed minimally.See less

(04/29/11) You may wake up with a sore throat, a hacking cough, or simply clearing your throat every morning -- or you may just feel as if something has settled in the back of your throat. Any of those experiences could mean that you've got postnasal drip. On any given day, you've got one to two quarts of mucus running down the back of your throat. That's an awful lot of slime running through your head, but it serves a significant purpose. Mucus acts as a broom, cleaning out the nasal passages. It kicks out bacteria, viruses, and other infection-causing invaders and clears out other foreign particles. Mucus also helps humidify the air that travels in your body, keeping you and your insides comfortable. Unless you think about it, you probably don't even notice all that mucus making its way down your throat. But if you become acutely aware of mucus in the back of your throat, or feel as if someone has turned on a faucet in your head, you're probably dealing with postnasal drip. Postnasal drip...See less

(04/29/11) If given the choice, we all want to make the right decisions for our health. We want to look and feel as vibrant as possible well into old age. But often times we reach for drug store medications or pharmaceutical drugs for all that ails us, and while I am in no way advocating that this is always a mistake, why not try a more natural remedy first? Why not feel better without the side effects that often come with taking medications? Natural remedies often dramatically alleviate our suffering and they're great for staving off illness on down the road. Feel better from the inside out and treat your body like the holistic vessel it is rather than curing one illness without regard for the rest of your body. Of course, you should consult a doctor before making any drastic changes to your lifestyle or diet.See less

(04/29/11) Lets face it: there are grocery and convenience stores (not to mention schools and school vending machines) that are full of chemical- and sugar-laced foods we should never eat. Im frequently asked which ones are the worst. So, here are my picks for the top 10 worst foods you may be eating, in order, from terrible to tragic. The #1 Worst Food of All Time may surprise you! 10. Ice CreamSorry, I know just about everyone loves ice cream, but todays ice cream is not only full of sugar, most of it is also loaded with trans fats, artificial colors and flavors, many of which are known neurotoxins (brain- and nervous-system damaging chemicals). Of course, there are healthier varieties, but most ice cream is hazardous to your health. 9. Corn and Tortilla ChipsSince the advent of genetically-modified foods, most corn we eat is a health-damaging frankenfood. Corn causes rapid blood sugar fluctuations, which you may notice as mood-swings, weight gain, or irritability, among other symptoms....See less

(04/29/11) There are a few plants in Nature that are extremely concentrated with vitamins and minerals surpassing even kale and broccoli. Although micro-plants are related to dark leafy vegetables, they provide a higher level of nutrients than other foods. These micro-plants consist of blue-green algae, chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass, and barley grass. They were the very beginning source of life for this planet and they continue to nourish us well into the future. Micro-plants come in many forms and colors, harvested both from the sea and dry land, and nutritionally each one is an excellent source of two important phytochemicals, chlorophyll and lycopene. These super powerful nutrients support your bodys ability to detoxify heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins, plus they are loaded with nutrients to boost your immunity to disease. Micro-plants, commercially known as Green Foods, contain a concentrated combination of phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, bioflavanoids, proteins, amino...See less

(04/29/11) Swapping popular fruit and vegetables for their less common counterparts can greatly improve the healthiness of diets. Even if you already maintain a healthy diet, there are some simple switches that you can employ to greatly boost the average intake of phytonutrientsthe substances in fruit and vegetables that help to protect the body from conditions such as heart disease and cancer. According to findings presented at the 2010 Experimental Biology conference in California, the data highlights the importance of not only the quantity but also the significant impact the quality and variety of the fruits and vegetables you eat can have on your health. The idea is that by swapping some of your staples, you increase the variety of crucial nutrients required for maximum health and longevity. Since variety is so important, Id suggest not going for a 100 percent replacementbut as you can according to availability, locality and season. (04/29/11) Even if you're not a full out vegetarian, getting enough iron isn't as easy as it sounds. According to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), most men consume recommended amounts of iron, but women of childbearing age and young children often do not get enough iron in their diets. Iron is super important because it builds red blood cells, healthy bones, and muscular tissue. Most importantly, it carries life-giving oxygen to human blood cells. So where can you get iron the green way? According to the Daily Green, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iron is 18 mg for adult women and 8 mg for men. Check out these top choices when it comes to getting your daily allowance of iron: * Organic Spinach Duh, Popeye, this is certainly the most obvious choice when it comes to iron. Throw it into a salad or make my Spinach Artichoke Bake. * Cereal Both cold and hot cereals typically have iron ranging from about 2 mg to 21 mg so read the label to get the most bang for...See less

(04/29/11) We all know that soda isn't the best thing for us. Josh wrote about how soda is a huge source of empty calories. You can drink a bottle of sweet-tasting soda and still have room to down a sandwich or something, and the soda will have as many calories as the entree. Not only is soda bad for you, it's bad for the planet considering that cans and plastic bottles are hugely wasteful. Even though they can be recycled, it takes energy to recycle them. Now there's another reason to give up this syrupy mess. According to a study done at Loyola University Health System women who drink two or more cans of soda a day are more than twice as likely to show signs of kidney disease. The study examined data from a representative sample of 9,358 US adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. These are pretty extreme statistics if you ask me. But if you do decide to indulge in a soda once in a while, fill up a thermos or a mug with soda. This will cut on waste and packaging.See less

(04/29/11) In a study of 2564 people of varying ethnic backgrounds, researchers at Columbia University in New York and the Miller School of Medicine in Miami found a significant correlation between diet soda consumption and the risk of stroke. Begun in 1993, the Northern Manhattan Study known as NOMAS has been ongoing and still continues. Researchers divided people into seven groups: those who drank less than one soda of any type per month, those with moderate soda consumption (up to six per week), daily regular soda consumption (one or more daily), moderate diet soda only, daily diet soda only, moderate diet soda and sometimes regular soda, and daily diet soda with any regular soda consumption. Scientists factored in the age, ethnicity, gender, exercise habits, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and caloric intake. During the test period participants had 559 strokes combined. After considering all the other factors studied, researchers concluded that regular diet soda drinkers had a 48%...See less

(04/28/11) In Barbara Harris's home, you won't find air fresheners, non-stick pans or mattresses containing harsh flame retardants. That's by design: Ms. Harris tries to create a lifestyle that minimizes the chances she'll come into contact with harmful chemicals found in everyday products. "I have a very simple, very scent-free, and very low-chemical household," she declares. Ms. Harris, who lives in Springhill, N.S., is part of a grassroots effort to minimize exposure to chemicals contained in dozens of consumer items, substances that a growing body of research suggests may pose health risks. Along with others at the Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia, Ms. Harris has used her experiences to help put together a self-help guide on the Internet (http://www.lesstoxicguide.ca) for those who want to cut potentially harmful substances out of their lives, and may not be sure how to do it. (04/22/11) According to a recent story on Discovery News, scientists have proven that bee venom can improve our brain function. According to the study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, a peptide toxin extracted from the venom called apamin is a neurotoxin that blocks certain central nervous system channels. Apamin can cause hyperexcitable nerves in the brain, which can cause convulsions and respiratory paralysis, but it can also lead to improved learning and memory. Scientists have been aware for a while that certain bug venoms were effective in treating brain disorders like MS but now scientists have learned how to identify when the apamin binds to particular channels in the brain. This is important in order to develop medications that can mimic what apamin does in the body. "Drug design depends on knowing the target," Neil Marrion, a professor in the University of Bristol's Physiology and Pharmacology department, told ScienceDaily. "Our findings have provided a new approach to...See less

(04/13/11) As an MD, Ive watched too many of my colleagues yank out anti-depressant samples every time a patient starts to cry. So on behalf of physicians everywhere, let me apologize for our trigger-happy prescription-writing behavior. I dont mean to diminish the pain someone who is depressed might experience. But tears are healthy. Sadness doesnt always need treatment. And its important to remember that the pain muscle and the joy muscle are the same. If you cant feel one, you wont feel the other. That said, clinical depression sucks, and if youre someone who suffers from it, my heart goes out to you. Im in no way intending to diss anti-depressants or suggest you ignore your doctors advice. I know anti-depressants can be life-saving for people. But unless youre suicidal or otherwise in dire need of urgent medication, before you dose up on side-effect laden pharmaceuticals, its worth considering some natural treatments that might help lift your mood.See less

(04/13/11) If you haven't read about the recent study, here's some news: the World Cancer Research Fund has found that eating processed meats is directly linked to cancer. WATCH SLIDESHOW: How Long Does it Take for a Happy Meal to Decompose? From a National Review story about the study: "Processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption. Consumers should stop buying and eating all processed meat products for the rest of their lives." In reviewing more than 7,000 clinical trials, WCRF found that processed meats, including bacon, sausage, hot dogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and just about all red meat used in frozen meals, are made (unless you look specifically for nitrate-free products) with sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite is used to change the color of the meats, so they look fresh even when they're not. It also forms nitrosamines, a carcinogen, in the human body. (04/13/11) A diet with too many processed foods can cause a world of trouble for us on a number of fronts. Processed foods lack nutrient density, meaning that many of the vitamins and minerals have been lost in processing or they weren't there in the first place. Second, we tend to overeat foods like chips, cookies, boxed meals, dips, etc because we don't feel satiated. We don't feel as full as with whole foods loaded with fibrous fruits and vegetables, so we keep on eating. But the most scary aspect of processed foods can often be what we didn't even realize was added in the first place. Food additives serve a world of purposes, most of which we weren't even aware of, but they can also do us harm. You may be seriously surprised at not only what you've been ingesting, but what it could be doing to you and the planet.See less
