(05/03/12) What this photograph does more than anything else I think, is to demonstrate how forcibly bookshelves can be used to accent the colour of a room, when they are presented in such a strong and contrasting hue. While the bookcases are perfectly placed to take advantage of what – given the size and placement of the doorway – could probably be considered a ‘dead space’, these aqua bookshelves perfectly pick out the aqua furniture present in the adjoining room, while the bookcases themselves become the primary design statement of the area as a whole. I love these aqua bookcases, but then again wouldn’t any bibliophile love a design feature where the bookshelves themselves are the primary focus of attention? Share your thoughts fellow reader. (05/03/12) Creating the perfect warmth and ambiance in a library and/or study is an important, yet difficult thing to achieve (goodness knows I’m still trying to reach ‘ambiance nirvana’ with my room, but have yet to get close), but judging by this shot taken by Qtea (and chosen as this week’s Bookshelf of the Week), someone has got it absolutely spot on. However this library doesn’t just belong to any ‘someone’, it’s actually the former personal library room of Icelandic novelist, the 1955 Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness (1902-1998). Halldór’s library forms one of the rooms of his former home Gljúfrasteinn, which has been preserved as a museum, and presented as it would have been when Halldór and his family lived there, for almost half a century. I absolutely love Qtea’s shot. The warmth and coziness the picture exudes makes Halldór’s library so inviting, and I can really see myself, as I’m sure many of you also can, lounging comfortably in one of those chairs for many, many hours, soaking up...See less

With books flowing from wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, and even spilling out to the next room, this picture definitely speaks for itself. And what does it say most of all? Throughout the house lush fabrics were used: satins, silks, velvets and linens. I used all the existing pieces of furniture and reupholstered everything. I brought in many new occasional pieces, lamps, mirrors, and artwork; all with a distinct 1940's glamour to them. The result was a light and bright home with elegance as the theme.See less
