(06/29/09) There was a time when displaying Japanese Characters on your browser was very complicated. Today, its not as much of an issue. In case you are having trouble, the following information may still be of some use to you. Below I have links to two sites where you can download software that will work with most systems. Free trial versions are available. Simply download one and run the program. When this is done, you should see a small strip appear somewhere on the screen. Make sure it is set for S-JIS, the characterset used for this page. KanjiKit should start in S-JIS, but with NJwin, you will have to change it. As soon as this is done, you should be able to view the characters correctly. You may also need to use the encoding option on your browser under the view menu, under fonts for IE, or encoding for Netscape. IMPORTANT: for Netscape Navigator 4.5 you must go to Character Set under the View menu, and set it to Japanese (auto detect or S-JIS). Once this is done, go to View/character set...See less

(07/02/09) From pachinko to green tea, this entertaining bilingual encyclopedia allows you to learn all about Japanese culture, in English or Japanese. Eschewing the popular notion that Japanese culture is somehow mysterious and impenetrable to outsiders, the writers – one Japanese and one not – hope that this book will help outsiders to better understand various aspects of Japanese culture, and also help Japanese people learn how to better explain their own culture to non-Japanese. (07/02/09) Product Description Learning to read Japanese is a little like running a marathon: it is a long, drawn out process, and it can get a little boring along the way. What we learners of Japanese need is a little fun now and then, something that brings a smile to our faces. As luck would have it, this book does just that. This magic trick is accomplished by the book's nine curious stories. Taken from the weekly magazine "Shukan Asahi," these stories, while true to life, verge on the hard to believe, and that's what evokes the magic element of fun. But that's not all. Each story is accompanied by a translation, faithfully done and easy to follow. Then, sentence by sentence, follows a short gloss of each word and phrase, a reverse derivation of each declined verb and adjective, detailed notes on vocabulary and grammar, and information and commentary on the cultural background. All of these aids can be accessed easily when needed. "Reading Japanese with a Smile: Nine Stories from a Japanese...See less

(07/02/09) Product Description A desire to communicate heart-to-heart with people from another culture is what attracts many people to language study in the first place. But it can take a long time to make friends and feel socially comfortable in a Japanese-speaking context, and there are few textbooks that can help. This volume does just that, by collecting and discussing more than 400 phrases that are useful when talking about personal experience and nuances of feeling. With this book you can learn to say that you like someone, love someone, respect someone, have a thing for someone, have a crush on someone, still carry a torch for someone, have no feelings either way for someone, or wouldn't give someone the time of day. You can tease a friend about their new relationship, talk about children or parents, vent anger or express sympathy. You can learn many different ways to thank a person or to respond to a compliment, and the specific attitude that each conveys. All entries are defined and then...See less

(07/02/09) Amazon.com Review How does one learn kanji, the characters of written Japanese? The traditional approach is rote memorization. Japanese children write each kanji hundreds of times at their desks, and eventually they are acquired. Michael Rowley offers a different way, a mnemonic-association approach that provides a hook on which to hang the meaning and retrieve it easily when the kanji comes into view. The concept is simple: each character is represented under the word or concept it stands for (such as turf, bamboo, eat, or duty), followed by the pronunciations of the word in Chinese and Japanese, and a drawing that captures the meaning and resembles the character enough so that it'll come to mind whenever the kanji is seen. Organized thematically in chapters such as "Power," "Places," "Tools," "The World," "Food," "People," and "The Body," Rowley's book lets you learn the root symbols before teaching the words that add to them for further meanings. For example, the character for water...See less

(07/02/09) This book is best for intermediate students who want to improve their listening and speaking skills. It comes with a CD that allows you to practice "shadowing" - a technique used by interpreters - in a variety of situations. The book claims to be for beginners, but we think it would be a bit challenging for most beginners, because it uses some kanji (though furigana is included), and the level of conversation needed seems to be higher than most beginners. The thing about this book is that it really focuses on situations that you would face in daily life in Japan, such as taking the train, trying on clothes, going to the post office, restaurants, and talking on the phone; and then moves into more challenging real-life situations such as: inviting and declining, making an offer, discussing vacation plans, and asking people for opinions. Each chapter features a bundle of conversational dialogue, which you practice reading, listening to, repeating, and then using, in conjunction with the...See less

(07/02/09) (Text below taken from Shadowing: Let's Speak Japanese!) What is Shadowing? Shadowing is a form of training that is designed to help improve simultaneous interpretation. However its effectiveness is not limited to this area and with its simple method, beginner students will also gain great value from it. Whilst listening to a flowing conversation, being able to 'shadow' the conversation by repeating immediately afterwards is what we have called the Shadowing learning method. Why Shadowing? "I want to be able to speak Japanese easily!", "I want to speak fluently!" We believe that there are many Japanese language students who share these desires. Another opinion that we often hear is, "I understand what people say to me, but I can't speak myself". Shadowing acts as a bridge between understanding what you want to say in your mind and being able to actually say it out loud promptly and fluently. To express this differently, Shadowing is a training method that raises ability from...See less

(07/02/09) Product Description From the very earliest stages of study until far into the intermediate level, students of the Japanese language are continually scratching their heads over the usage of verbs. It is no wonder that they should feel the need for a solid reference book, one they can continually turn to throughout their studying careers. The Handbook of Japanese Verbs is just that book. The Introduction takes the first step toward comprehension by pointing out the features of Japanese verbs that stand in contrast to their English counterparts, such as tense, politeness level, auxiliaries, and transitive and intransitive forms. Part 1 shows through tables and concise commentary how Japanese verbs are categorized, conjugated, and combined with auxiliaries. Each form is followed by a short exercise, reinforcing the points just made. Part 2 takes up the forms described in the first part and shows how they function in full-fledged sentences. Each discussion is followed by examples and...See less

(07/02/09) Product Description A comprehensive, communicative, and practical guide to using Japanese, Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary is an invaluable tool for anyone with an interest in the Japanese language. It has been edited with the needs of English-speaking users in mind, whether students, teachers, business people, or casual linguists, and special care has been taken at each stage of its compilation including the selection of entry words and their equivalents, the wording of the detailed explanations of Japanese words, the choice of example sentences, and even its functional page design to maximize its usefulness. What is furigana and why is it so important? Furigana refers to the small kana that are printed above or alongside kanji to show their pronunciation. With furigana superscripts, the beginner who is familiar with hiragana and katakana is able to read even the most difficult and obscure kanji at a glance.
