(06/10/09) Florence - a brief guide to the city's attractions, with ticket booking links The most beautiful city in Italy? Perhaps. For more than 2000 years Florence (or Firenze) has been an important centre in this part of Italy, not just a capital of Tuscany, but briefly (from 1865 to 1870) also capital of the infant Kingdom of Italy. And it was in the 19th century that foreigners first began to rhapsodise its charms. For English poets and writers, such as the Brownings and EM Forster, Florence was a refreshing counter to the stolidity of Anglo-Saxon life. This was the city of Dante Alighieri, Boccaccio and Michelangelo, of Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Donatello, and also of Galileo, Machiavelli and the Medicis. An extraordinary fusion of artistic creativity, political sophistication and scientific progress, this was in short the cradle of the Renaissance ... most of what we now value as European high culture was born here. (06/10/09) Florence is home to two of the world's most famous museums, the Accademia and the Uffizi. Both are very popular; I recommend booking tickets when you plan your vacation. Florence is the perfect Italian city for leisure travel in many ways, not the least of which is its world-class museums. Two of the most famous works of art, Michelangelo Buonarroti's David and Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus, are displayed here, along with many, many other top examples of Renaissance art. A luxury vacation in Florence isn't complete without a visit to at least one of its two top museums. Tourists are allowed to stroll through museum halls at their leisure (although the lines to get in are often quite formidable). Florence is home to the most Renaissance art and architecture in the world, and the sheer magnitude of museums can be overwhelming. Here are my favorites, the museums in Florence which I consider to be the top can't-miss stops to enhance your Italian vacation. The best (and most popular)...See less

(06/10/09) If the line is too long at the Uffizi, there are other art museums in Florence that are also awe-inspiring, with no wait to get in. The best of these are described here. The most popular museums in Florence are deservedly so: The Accademia and Uffizi are truly two of the best museums in the world for Renaissance works of art. A luxury vacation in Italy, however, doesn't mean simply getting to those two top museums. It's your vacation; travel at your leisure to some smaller, but also jaw-droppingly impressive art museums in Florence. My favorite smaller Florence museums seem to never have lines, are a relative bargain, and are as steeped in Medieval and Renaissance art history as are the two "biggies." Best, tourists don't need to order tickets while still planning their Italian vacation. Those less-than-organized luxury travel fans never have to settle for just the upscale shopping and great Tuscan restaurants in Florence. As long as they're open, you can always walk right into any of...See less
