Or they make desperate, tearful, sweaty efforts at holding on to the shreds of a life they've betrayed. They tell me they have gone through all of this for a quick thrill or a furtive moment of romance. Sometimes they tell me they don't remember making the decision that tore apart their life: "It just happened." Sometimes they don't even know they are being unfaithful. You’ve got to hand it to Creative. Or at least feel sorry for it. No sooner had it helped create the portable digital media player market with its Zen Jukebox, when Apple swept in relatively late in the game to sweep up all the plaudits with its iPod, the latest version of which I’ll be looking at tomorrow. To add insult to injury, it turns out that Creative even owns the patent on the interface that Apple used to such good effect - only Apple slapped a nifty wheel on the front of its device and the rest, as they say, is history. The sales figures speak for themselves. In the last quater of the year alone Apple sold over ten million iPods and according to some figures has a 65 per cent share on the hard drive based market. Creative, on the other hand, has around 2-4 per cent of the market. Wow, Apple must be shaking in its boots. So shouldn’t Creative just hang up its own boots and give up? Back in October I looked at the PlayGear Stealth headphones from Logitech. These were in-ear headphones, aimed at the PSP market, but they performed well with audio players too. Although the Stealths lacked bass, they did offer exceptional value for money. Now I have the Creative EP-630 headphones in front of me, which are similar to the Stealths in many ways, but carry a significantly higher price tag. The question is whether the EP-630s are worth the extra cash. Like the Stealths, the EP-630s are in-ear headphones – they don’t just sit in your ears, they push right into your ear. There are two major advantages to this type of design, first up is that they don’t tend to fall out of your ears when you’re jogging like standard ear-bud type headphones do. But more important is that with the headphones pushed deep into your ears, you cut out almost all the background noise. And the firewall only half-worked in Google's case: it could block sites that Google pointed to, but in some cases it would let slip through a list of search results that included banned sites. So if you were in Shanghai and you searched for "human rights in China" on google.com, you would get a list of search results that included Human Rights in China (hrichina.org), a New York-based organization whose Web site is banned by the Chinese government. But if you tried to follow the link to hrichina.org, you would get nothing but an error message; the firewall would block the page.
