(11/07/11) In the 1970s, countless novice bakers considered Brown's Tassajara Bread Book (1970) their bible; the book has sold more than a million copies. His Tassajara Cooking (1973) also came out of his experience as baker and head cook at the Tassajara Zen Center, and he later coauthored The Greens Cookbook (1987) from San Francisco's acclaimed vegetarian restaurant. Some of the recipes in this book are adaptations of earlier ones, but most are new, and many are from Brown's cooking classes: Endive Salad with Grilled Figs, Asparagus with Roasted Almonds, Red Bartlett Pear Tart. Recipes are grouped into small chapters and follow musings on Zen teachings, meditations, or stories, from "Homemade Bread Touches My Heart" to "Potato Fiascoes" to "Tomato Ecstasy." The text is readable and quite absorbing, and the vegetarian recipes are simple but often elegant. Recommended for larger and special collections. (08/03/11) Garner's Modern American Usage is the latest by the author and editor of several legal dictionaries (including Black's Law Dictionary), among other works on language and style. The second edition maintains the same basic format as the first (called Dictionary of Modern American Usage), published in 1998: each entry discusses the usage of the word, provides quotations for illustration, and gives citations. There are two types of entries. Word entries, which are generally short, discuss individual words or groups of words. Essay entries discuss topics related to usage and style, including contractions, danglers, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement, among others. Compared to the first edition's entry for complexioned; complected, the second edition makes only minor editorial changes; the real difference is the easier-to-read spacing in the updated volume. The second edition shows more substantive changes in the essay entry for Passive voice without changing the basic meaning or adding...See less

(05/22/11) How does an artists interpretation of historical events alter our understanding of them? Kings, queens, presidents, and generals from Alexander the Great to Theodore Roosevelt have commissioned paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs of major events, and artists have responded to important moments with works that forever shape historical memory. The book deals with specific episodes, from the proclamation of the Code of Hammurabi to more recent events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It also deals with broader themes, such as the founding of states (Persia, Rome, the Chinese Empire, the United States) and war (Delacroixs Liberty Leading the People, Picassos Guernica). Here too are the great voyages of exploration, the industrial revolution, and much more. World history is vividly elucidated in these works of art.See less

(10/30/10) Never has fast home cooking with fresh ingredients been more important than it is now. The pressure on the home cook is ever increasing: how can I prepare a balanced meal from scratch when I have only 30 minutes to spare, and 4 hungry mouths to feed? I want to make something from scratch for one, but will it be simple enough? Every minute counts-I've got unexpected guests tonight, what can I whip up quick, that won't disappoint? Family food is not just about fussy eaters and getting the quantities right. It's also about flexible eating-how often does everyone sit around the table together? Once a week if you're lucky! So, food that can be prepared in advance, and simple straightforward dishes, are an essential part of the equation. We've taken all of this into consideration and come up with recipes that cover every need, with speed, so you will never have to resort to the ready meals aisle in the supermarket. The Illustrated Quick Cook is not trying to change the way you eat, introduce...See less

(10/30/10) Gold is culinary director of a New York City restaurant consulting firm that numbers the Rainbow Room among its clients; she developed the idea of "little meals" for that restaurant's Promenade Bar. The concept is not new (other incarnations include "small plates," grazing menus, even classic tapas), but it remains a popular one. Gold's little meals are sophisticated, often extravagant, from Seviche with a Twist to Pan-Seared Foie Gras with Sun-dried Cranberry Sauce, though there are some funkier ideas too ("little Meals with a Kick"). There are recipes for romantic late-night suppers, for "the ladies who lunch," for indulgent snacks at almost anytime. Not for everyone, but it should find an audience. (11/20/07) Perfect Vegetables is the work of Cook's Illustrated magazine, a publication devoted to providing the "best" American recipes. Like the magazine, from which its contents is largely drawn, the book offers super-tested recipes--as many as 18 tries for stuffed tomatoes, for example--for an A to Z vegetable range, artichokes to zucchini. The book also includes dozens of technique and equipment notes ("Stir-Fry Basics," is one), plus a short section on vegetable soups. An impressive recipe range is here and accounted for--classic dishes like grilled eggplant and braised fennel, plus "newer" formulas for the likes of Grilled Red Peppers with Mint and Feta and Glazed Curried Carrots with Currants and Almonds. Are these the ultimate versions of the dishes included? Certainly they represent exhaustive investigation--and most cooks will find the Perfect Vegetables take, which offers many technical refinements (preheat your baking sheet to ensure golden oven-baked...See less

(11/20/07) Wislawa Szymborska's poems are admired around the world, and her unsparing vision, tireless wit, and deep sense of humanity are cherished by countless readers. Unknown to most of them, however, Szymborska also worked for several decades as a columnist, reviewing a wide variety of books under the unassuming title "Nonrequired Reading." As readers of her poems would expect, the short prose pieces collected here are anything but ordinary. Reflecting the author's own eclectic tastes and interests, the pretexts for these ruminations range from books on wallpapering, cooking, gardening, and yoga, to more lofty volumes on opera and world literature. Unpretentious yet incisive, these charming pieces are on a par with Szymborska's finest lyrics, tackling the same large and small questions with a wonderful curiosity.See less
