I don't know much about P&S cameras, or Canon. My weapon of choice is a Nikon D70s. Sorry.

I have a Pentax *ist DSLR for most of my camera needs, but when I'm out and about I carry a Kodak easyshare Z740. It's not the smallest, but definitely easy to use when you have someone else taking the pictures.

I have a Kodak EasyShare Z7590. I absolutely love it. I haven't had a lot of cameras in the past but I am able to take a lot of great pictures with this camera. This is last year’s model so I am sure that this year’s model has a few new "Bells and Whistles" but I am very happy with Kodak. My last camera was a Kodak of about 6 models ago and it kept working great until I fried it by putting inferior batteries in it. I have played around with all the settings and although it is designed for a novice to use with its easy to understand dial settings I think it takes professional digitals. I plan to take a photography class soon just to find out what I am really doing. I really have enjoyed this little camera even though it is chunky compared to the slim cameras that you can get with other models. I don't mind looking like a photographer verses taking pictures with a mini cam. I like the options that you get with a larger camera. Good luck in your search. My sister just got a Sony Cybershot as an early Christmas present. I'm not sure of the model number, but it seems to take good pictures. It has a 3X optical zoom which should be ok for on the town pics and is small enough to stash in an evening bag. Might be worth checking into.

I just ordered the Canon SD630 but I don't know how it will hold up for the things you are looking for. For my budget and the features I wanted, this seemed like a great choice. My mom has the SD400 from a couple of years ago and it's still takes amazing pics! Good luck!

Have you checked out the Fuji FinePixF20? http://www.fujifilmrpt.com/index.jsp;jsessionid=7E2020DCE17B807C3C4640CC164130C5. There's a pretty cool video on this website (and I've seen national commercials) on it. It's definitely on my wish list.

if you want an SLR, go with a Canon. We love ours. I just got an Olympus Stylus 810 and for a P&S, compact, throw-it-in-your-bag camera, it's great. Be sure to get one with rechargeable batteries, as lot of the P&S only run on regular batteries.

fujifilm finepix f30 is good. i don't have it but i've read the reviews and it's supposed to be good for low-light settings. and it's compact. and it's a point & shoot. i might even get it myself. it's not on any of my lists yet though.
