Here are two different ways to add a lining to a bag, brought to you by Autum: Lining Tutorial, number one There are various ways to put a lining in a bag; I am going to try to describe two methods I use. The first method involves simply inserting the lining into the bag and finishing the raw edges with a binding. You could use this method with most any style of purse; the one I’m making is a gusseted purse with a rounded bottom. First cut out all your bag and lining pieces and interface as desired. The type of interfacing you use is a matter of personal preference and can vary depending on the style of bag you are making. Unless you are making a very unstructured bag some sort or interfacing or interlining will make a stronger, better looking bag. Once upon a time, somebody asked how I do my zippers. Because I like to share knowledge, I decided I'd write up a little tutorial for my method (and probably the method of others, too). Because I am lazy busy, it's taken me a long time, but I finally got round to it. Some things: This is a tutorial for a zipped pouch, but you can use the same method on larger projects. If you put little 'end caps' on the ends of the zipper before sewing it into your project, you can have a zip that doesn't go all the way across, as with this purse. Doing that can take some jiggery pokery to get it to work, but it's not so difficult, really. I found this fabulously perfect way to hem jeans on the Cavaricci site, which has since been taken down, so here’s the lowdown. This method keeps the original hem in tact and is especially helpful now that all jeans are made to be 34 inches long for mammoth supermodels. Plus, it took less than 30 minutes. A couple notes: It’s best to do one leg at a time, so as not to have too much undoing to do in case something goes awry. Also, it’s good to know the length that you want each leg to be. Sometimes, one leg will be a bit shorter or longer than the other before you hem. Step 1: Decide how much length you would like to take off. Divide that number in half. (Hems should fall just below the bottom of your ankle. Also, if you generally wear high heels, or a certain height of heel, you might want your hem a bit longer - it should fall an inch to a half inch above the floor at your heel.) Following is how I make holders, there are other ways and some of you may read this tutorial and snort to yourselves and mutter under your breath “THAT’s not how you make tissue holders”….well it’s how I make them :) so far no complaints. My technique is the “Lazy Ass Bastard” method, or LAB™ for short. First up, I’m all about templates for patterns, especially small crafty projects that I’ll make more than once. I love adhering patterns to strawboard, makes it so much easier to place your pattern onto the fabric, trace with your chalk and then cut out. So, for my version of the tissue holder, I’ve cut a template that’s 6 inches x 7 inches. Why inches you Aussies ask? My cutting matt and quilt ruler work inches so it’s just easier to go with inches. Pick your outer fabric, trace and cut out slightly larger than the template. I also like to use a midweight fabric, just a personal preference. I also like to make more than one at a time, it’s quicker. Next up, I usually line my holders... See less

Below are instructions for a very simple window shade. They are loosely based on a pattern I purchased several years ago—Vogue 1247, a “very easy” pattern. I love these shades because they are endlessly adaptable, and I have dreamed up so many variations that I have not had the chance to implement. Window treatments are so expensive, often because they involve so much fabric, but these use only twice the size of your window (I suppose you could even make them unlined if privacy is not a concern). These could be made using new or thrifted fabrics. I have also dreamed of making little window quilts, because I think the stitching would play so interestingly in the light. There is even the possiblity of embellishing these with appliques or trimmings. Please email me if you get the chance to make these, I would love to post some on the blog. There are only a couple of things that we can add to finish it: a hard bottom and a closure. Neither of which you are required to do… you can take your bag now and call it done! Step 25: Give your gusseted bag form with a hard bottom. Measure the depth and length of your bottom seams. Step 26: Find a source of cardboard. Cut out two rectangles using the dimensions from Step 25. Step 27: Paste the two pieces together. Step 28: Cut out two pieces of fabric to cover the cardboard piece. Sew these two pieces, right sides together. Leave one side open. Turn this sleeve right side out. Slip your cardboard bottom piece into the sleeve. Close the open end. (This is an example of the ever useful pillowcase method!) Step 29: Glue the bottom piece into the bottom of the lining. I usually use hot glue. There are other ways to attach the bottom piece to the lining.... See less

It's sized to fit a travel wipes container (you know, those hard plastic ones that hold wet baby wipes) and a few disposable diapers; if you increase the dimensions by a bit, you can put your cloth dipes (or a whole lot more disposables) in it, too. (I would like to make it clear that I have not seen one of the $15 ones in person, and this is my interpretation of a generalized design. I have in no way copied the dimensions, styling, or other features of the one that is patent-pending, and had made fabric diaper-holding cases for myself before that one came on the market.) I would recommend measuring the wipes case you use most frequently before sewing this. If it's wider or thicker than a standard case (I used the "Huggies" hard plastic case when making the pattern), you'll need to enlarge the... See less

For those who are starting to get the itch to stitch, we wanted to create a project that could be done without patterns and in as short amount of time as possible. Therefore, we present step-by-step instructions (and nifty little illustrations) on how to make our Nested Fold-up Crayon Pouch. The instructions follow below. Please note that I am no sewing expert :-) so please excuse my rather barbaric methods and lack of proper sewing vocabulary :-) Please also note that this is an image-heavy post, so allow a few minutes for all the images to load up.
