They saw a threat to jazz with the more popular dance music that was often lumped together with jazz in people's minds. To their ears, jazz was something purer and less polished. And they were determined to keep it alive. They started, fittingly, with Pee Wee Russell leading Max Kaminsky, Dicky Wells, Zutty Singleton, and James P. Johnson. It was the first of over 100 titles that focuses on traditional jazz and small-group swing. The next session, the Sidney Bechet-Muggsy Spanier Big Four in 1940, is generally acknowledged as the crown jewel in Bechet's considerable recorded legacy. All the shades of the rainbow--and more--are showcased beautifully on Ay, Candela, a vivid, varried collection of classic tracks. The assembled songs span the 1960s, '70s, and early '80s, but they sound as fresh and vibrant as anything recorded in the last few years. Ferrer is a master of delivery, and he works wonderfully alongside the expert musicians and background vocalists. It makes for some great moments, particularly during the joyous "Mi Tonada Montuna," "Manana Me Voy Pa' Sibanicu" and the title track. Ferrer's best moment, however, comes during the stirring "Una Fuerza Immensa," a lush, captivating bolero that conjures images of swaying palm trees and slow-dancing couples. I've been waiting a couple years for Pat and his band to get out nd another CD, and this one doesn't disappoint. It's a stripped down bluesy affair recorded in Jimbo Mathus's Knockdown South studios. There's so much live energy in this recordng, it almost sounds like they drank a case of Shiner Bocks and carted in a truckload of sawdust for the studio floor before they started rolling the tape. If you like your music real, and in particular, your blues raw, then this is the CD for you. I highly recommend catching Pat and his band live as well. At 77, Ibrahim Ferrer has lost none of his cheeky charm. Buenos Hermanos lives beautifully up to its title--"Good Brothers"--with those Cuban stalwarts Cachaito Lopez and Chucho Valdes joined by that genius of the electric guitar, Manuel Galban, and with the Blind Boys of Alabama enriching the basic mix. Moreover, Ry Cooder, who originally coaxed Buena Vista Social Club into life, here acts as midwife once again. This CD, he says, was "the last chance in the world today to work with such a voice." Well, Ferrer's voice no longer has the ringing exhilaration we heard on his solo album, Ibrahim Ferrer. His effects are more muted now, more laid back, but they still cover a kaleidoscopic range of tone and color. He delivers his boleros with lovely swing, and he radiates the genuineness of a premarketing age. I especially like the slightly extended version (extra guitar break) of "Dog Eat Dog" from the Atlantic show! Bon's voice kicks a$$ throughout and reminds us of what a loss it was when he passed.
