Part of the secret to Weird Al's success is that he's never been very weird at all, and very rarely are his satires in any way "biting"--or even satires, really. The 11-minute parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" is funny at least for the first listen, but it's hard to ridicule something so largely ridiculous in the first place (plus Jimmy Kimmel totally got the jump on him). The best thing Mr. Yankovic has always done is to take some decent pop tune, change a word or phrase, invent an entirely new premise for the tune, and make an inspired video to go along with it. He does that several times here; Green Day's "American Idiot" becomes the hockey-obsessed "Canadian Idiot," and "White & Nerdy" is a truly inspired take on Chamillionaire's "Ridin'." I was just a youngun when this movie and soundtrack came out, but I can still remember my older sister getting into her satin and sequined outfits and hitting the local disco with friends every weekend. Say what you will about disco, or the late 70's as a whole. You have to give this landmark album 5 stars. Saturday Night Fever, both the film and the soundtrack changed the course of the 70's. The nation went from listening to The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to Lipps Inc. and the Bee Gees. The songs contained on this soundtrack are dated, "Jive Talkin", "More Than a Woman", and "Disco Inferno" could only have come out during the late 70's, but just try not tapping your foot to them. Some of the tunes are sooooo corny; "Boogie Shoes" and "Open Sesame" would be almost funny, if they weren't so damn infectious, again making you involuntarily giving you the urge to dance. And a couple of the songs found here would be groan-worthy; "Night on Disco Mountain" and "A Fifth of Beethoven" if they... See less

(Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding "Real Gone" (her best song in ages). Rascal Flatts also cover Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit "Life Is a Highway," while John Mayer rocks out on "Route 66" (Chuck Berry's elegantly lean version is included as well). For his part, Newman continues his distinguished association with quality animation by supplying a nimble score. Amazon.com Most of the older songs included on the soundtrack to this animated feature are so well-known that they border on well-worn (Vangelis' Chariots of Fire theme has to be one of the most reused pieces of 20th-century music ever) but their feel-good quotient is also hard to deny. (Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland" again? Sure, bring it on!) Still, it's hard not to wish the brains behind this CD had included snippets from the movie, considering it features the vocal talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, and David Schwimmer. (One of the soundtrack's draws is a cover of Reel 2 Real's early ‘90s hit "I Like to Move It" by Sacha Baron Cohen (a.k.a. Ali G), who voices one of the characters. The track could well turn into the kind of kiddie hit inescapable at the coolest birthday party this year. Dana Glover's "It Is You (I Have Loved)" represents the soundtrack's requisite glossy ballad, but it's better than most, and John Powell's climactic, orchestral "True Love's First Kiss" makes one wish there was a full score to accompany this soundtrack. On the flip side, Smash Mouth cover the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" with a groovy treatment of crunchy hip-hop beats, and Leslie Carter (sister of Aaron and Nick) gives a perky performance on the Britney-esque "Like Wow!"
