The opening is actually startlingly similar to the film "28 Days Later" as our hero, a small-town cop, wakes up from a coma to find that the world has been overrun by zombies and everything he knew and loved is missing or outright destroyed. That similar starting point aside, after that the story takes on a really unique flavor for a zombie story. It's not so much about the zombies themselves, but about our hero, the ragtag group of survivors he joins, and how they try to rebuild after the cataclysm. Yeah, I know that a lot of zombie movies, at least the really good ones, are "commentaries on society" instead of straight horror flicks. That's very true. For example, it explains how to choose a machine gun emplacement from within a house and it tells you to avoid obvious windows and doors because it will be under surveillance from the enemy. The enemy are supposed to be zombies!!! They don't observe machine guns! The author doesn't even really TRY to make an imaginary attempt at a zombie threat with modified tactics to fit. Even the illustrations don't make much sense. They show soldiers checking zombie bodies for life by sticking their fingers in the bodies mouth and performing CPR on OBVIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED ZOMBIES! - yeah, I guess I loved the original too much to get into this much. I did enjoy some of it, but the ninja/martial arts training and wanting to kill people who injured her pride was a bit too much for me.

So my question is why have zombies become so popular lately, what's it saying about the universal mind? I understand zombie fear, and why it makes great horror flicks. I think at it's heart it's just a fear of people out of control, mob rule. When I think of the scary zombie I think of the Shirley Jackson short story The Lottery, ordinary people behaving in dark crazy ways. I think that somewhere in our subconscious there is a natural fear or cell memory or archetype of the crazy mob. I doubt (but have an open mind, brains exposed) that there will ever be real walking dead, but they're real, very real and... um, something else, I forgot. Report Spam
