The blocks are smooth, hard wood, and there are enough pieces for kids (and adults) to get really creative. My 3 1/2 year old son got this for Christmas, and had to grow into it. The blocks have to be on exactly straight, or the marbles get stuck, or fall off. My kids brush against the marble runs we build all the time, and knock them askew. It would be perfect if the blocks had a little ridge or something, to keep them from slipping. That said, we love this toy.
