I discovered this book a couple of years ago. There was a sale at Waterstone's, and I had all but one of the books needed to take advantage of said sale. This took my interest, so I got a hold of it, and thank goodness I did. I can honestly say that this is the most important non-fiction book I have ever read, and quite possibly one of the most important books period. Whilst I have always sensed something important might be taking place regarding technology, and I have always had a deep love of science and technology, Kurzweil highlights and articulates some incredible and illustrative concepts. I don't agree with everything he says, but the fundaments of the book seem entirely solid. Sometimes this terrifies me, but Kurzweil offers a great deal of hope as well. Whether you embrace or reject the implications, however, Kurzweil's book makes an extremely imposing case that I have yet to see refuted. Reading it will prepare you for the future, whether that future looks glorious or... See less

However, this book allows the maintenance of such scepticism, while summarising the evidence for our needing to be seriously concerned about how things are currently going. It's a very personal book in some ways, surprising in view of Lovelock's impeccable credentials as a scientist. He here demonstrates the formidable grasp he has managed on a very broad range of the most subtle concepts of modern science, and even those people whose view of science was formed by poor teaching should find the intellectual effort well worth the effort. Are we approaching a critical state? Have we already passed it? It was Singh's "Fermat's Last Theorem" that led me to look for another book on Number Theory, and I'm very pleased I stumbled upon "The Music of the Primes". I've read a lot of popular science books, but this is definitely my favourite. It is incredibly easy to read, and the author gets the balance perfectly right between historical information, description of individuals and circumstances, and the maths itself. I'm pleased the maths isn't covered too thoroughly - I suspect it would have left me upset that I couldn't follow it, and negatively affected the overall story. If you do feel the need, it's simple to get any information you like on the maths involved from the web - I have a print out of a very good explanation of the zeta function now tucked in the back of the book. The subject matter is mind-blowing, and I'm appalled that I hadn't heard about it properly before. I would love to have found out about this at a younger age, and will force my own children to read it as soon as... See less

I'm the producer of this DVD (and last year's Quay Brothers compilation), so I thought I'd reassure Sir Ninian and others that the release date is definitely 25th June. Apologies for the delay - due to circumstances beyond our control some of the masters arrived late, with various knock-on effects (subtitling, BBFC classification) that meant we could no longer guarantee delivery by the end of May. But the final package is being mass-produced as I write this. (And apologies for the shamelessly immodest five-star rating - I'd prefer to leave it blank, but Amazon says it's compulsory to leave one. But if anyone else had released an identical DVD, I'd be popping up here to give it five stars with a vengeance, so it's not entirely unreasonable.) A man (Tomoroh Taguchi) awakens from a nightmare in which his body is helplessly fusing with the metal objects around him, only to find it happening to him in real life... or is it? Haunted by memories of a hit and run (eerily prophetic of Cronenberg's Crash), the man knows this ordeal could be a dream, a fantastic form of divine retribution, or perhaps technological mutation born of guilt and rage. Shot in bracing black and white on a small budget, Tsukamoto puts a demented conceptual twist on good old-fashioned stop-motion effects and simple wire work, giving his film the surreal quality of a waking dream with a psychosexual edge (resulting in the film's most disturbing scene). Amazon.co.uk Review Two years after leaving the grungy cyberpunk calling card of the original Tetsuo, Shinya Tsukamoto re-enters the world of flesh and metal metamorphoses with Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer, a more narratively ambitious film that is neither sequel nor remake, but a rethinking of the ideas on a bigger scale with more impressive effects. The film begins in the recognisable world of the thriller, where a young middle-class couple see their son kidnapped by mysterious hoodlums, and then takes an abrupt turn into an underworld of cybermen led by a mad scientist performing twisted experiments. This is a review and a kinda word of warning. When this film was first released I was younger and allot more naive. After hearing about this amazing film that grabs the attention I thought ah ha... surprise my date with an entertaining and intellectual film choice. This worked well... until the film was about 1/2 way through. The film is amazing; it grabs you, lulls you into a false sense of security and then throws you around till you don't know which way is up. Its the equivalent of being brushed with a feather than hit with a frying pan. The performances are second to none; you feel empathy with the family and disgust to the people terrorising them.
