(01/25/12) I fear being one of the few to not be crazy over this book, but I have to admit that this book is far from being my top pick from our son's "library." The stories themselves are great - we'd have no Thomas the Tank Engine without them, after all - and the illustrations are good as well. However, I feel like there is a pretty big text:picture ratio such that this book is not as engrossing to a young child, even a Thomas devotee, as one might expect. This is less and less of a problem as my child gets older, but when we first started to read this book - somewhere between 2 and 2 1/2 - my son would rapidly lose interest in the stories, look away from the book, squirm to get off my lap, etc. Now that he is just a week shy of 3, it seems he has grown into this somewhat, but I still have a problem with the book itself, physically speaking. (01/25/12) The story begs to be read aloud in a group setting, but be prepared for giggles galore, as readers bark, pant and shake with Riff and company. A real crowd-pleaser. Starred, Kirkus Reviews Broadway, Hayess daughter-in-law, uses digital techniques to sneak a variety of realistic textures (woodgrain flooring, gingham fabric) into her sleek cartoons, adding lots of visual interest to a simple conceit. Publishers Weekly Colorful full-page illustrations add to the doggone good fun. School Library Journal Kids will adore the idea of a school day centered on doggy practices, with all the kids woofing and ball-chasing together. Bulletin for the Center of Childrens Books Rich blocks of color and simple illustrations bring this quirky story to life. This, along with the oddball concept and the many funny moments, will hook young readers. The Oklahoman See all Editorial ReviewsSee less

(01/25/12) Max's brother Benjamin collects stamps; his brother Karl collect coins. Max wants to collect something too; he decides to collect words. He begins with small, familiar ones--ate, who, big--which he cuts out of magazines and newspapers. Then he finds longer ones--alligator, baseball. He collects words of things he likes to eat, words that describe colors, and strange words that he finds in the dictionary. When his collection grows too big for his desk, he spreads his words on the floor. Lured by the creative power of words, his brothers rearrange, change, and move the words to create a story, which is visualized in Kulikov's artwork. Kulikov's signature style, which incorporates exaggerated expressions, unusual perspectives, and big-eyed characters, is a perfect match for Banks' clever tale. Kids are naturally inclined to collect things, and the idea of accumulating something intangible in this delightful homage to storytelling will intrigue them. In a word: captivating.
