Just a few blocks from San Francisco's federal courthouse, in the midst of the dingy streets of the Tenderloin, stands a slice of the Mediterranean. At lunchtime, people line up at this small Larkin Street restaurant for lentil soup, stuffed grape leaves, lamb and beef doner sandwiches and kebabs. The two-story cafe, with its worn wooden floors and Persian rug wall hangings, is immaculate and its staff friendly. The Iskender kebab -- baked bread cubes with yogurt and tomato sauce topped with lamb and beef doner -- is the most expensive dish on the menu at $8. The kebab plates, a choice of lamb, beef, chicken or a combination of meats ($7.50), come with rice, salad and bread. The falafel wrap ($5.50) takes two hands to eat and comes with a small salad. A large serving of steak fries can be had for $2, and a piece of sweet homemade baklava costs $3. Can't decide? Go for the combo appetizer, a platter of hummus, baba ghanoush, dolma and falafel ($7).
