It's the height of common sense, but the driver clearly knows this determined pigeon and readers do not-yet. "Hey, can I drive the bus?" asks the bird, at first all sweet reason, and then, having clearly been told no by readers, he begins his ever-escalating, increasingly silly bargaining. "I tell you what: I'll just steer," and "I never get to do anything," then "No fair! I bet your mom would let me." Each time, there is a link between the conversation shared by Stillwater and his visitor and the story he tells; it's somewhat tenuous in regard to the two older siblings, quite specific in the case of Karl, the youngest. The tales invite the children to consider the world and their perceptions from a different angle; for Karl, the panda's story gently but pointedly teaches the benefits of forgiveness. While the accompanying workbook aids in comprehension, it isn't enough to get you through the annoying vocals of Sing N Learn Vietnamese. In fact most of the songs contain screeching, blood-curdling vocals accompanied by low fidelity musical arrangements making listening to the songs almost unbearable. (My kids asked me to turn it off after two songs). One cause (maybe): The songs sound if the only instruments being played are extremely primitive (e.g., pots and pans, washboards, and the like) and the vocal quality is poor and grating at best.
