With 1000 miles of coast on both Oceans and more than 1500 islands, Panama has many kinds of beach hotel options. Best of all there are no crowds- can stroll, snorkel and sunbath on any number of gorgeous beaches with hardly a soul in sight. Lodgings include everything from all-inclusive resorts, to private island retreats to simple thatched seaside cabins. Activity Highlights: diving, snorkeling, sport fishing, sea kayaking, surfing, wind surfing, diving, sailing, jet skiis, island boat tours and mini-cruises. Panama's beach hotels and resorts are located in seven general areas: Pacific Coast Beaches Just an hour and a half from Panama City by car, these beaches are the most accessible. Like most everywhere else in Panama, no crowds here- just miles of picturesque beaches and sun 365 days a year. Options include the all-inclusive Royal Decameron Resort, the Coronado Hotel and Resort boasting Central America's only beachside golf course and a number of smaller establishments that offer villas and cabins- most of them beachfront. Atlantic Coast Beaches near the cities of Colon and Portobello Just under two hours from Panama City by car, are Caribbean-style beaches along the Atlantic Coast. Only smaller hotels are on the beach. Especially popular is Isla Grande, an island with the mini-resort, Bananas Village Resort and an assortment of more economical options. Near Portobello, Scuba Panama offers simple, attractive cabins and the very private Playa Blanca Lodge offers both seclusion and beauty on a lovely cove. To explore the Atlantic side, you may also stay at the spectacular Panama Canal Melia Hotel nearby in Colon and make day trips to the beaches and to the beautiful bayside historical town of Portobello. West Panama Near the Costa Rican Border Close to the border of Costa Rica and just outside the provincial capital of David are a series of scenic beaches famous for their glorious sunsets and proximity to the Chiriqui Highlands. The all-inclusive Las Olas Resort is the resort of choice in this area with its elegant decor, fine dining and personalized service. Islas Secas is a new private island resort set on 16 privately owned islands between the Gulf of Chiriqui and Coiba. Coiba Island National Marine Park off the coast of West Panama, is the largest island in Central America. You can visit Coiba with a diving or tour operator. The diving and snorkeling are world-class. Islands of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago Bocas del Toro is a very popular off-the-beaten-track kind of beach destination located on the Atlantic Coast in West Panama near the Costa Rican border. Bocas has both beaches and nature-thirteen ocountries have filmed their Survivor series in Bocas del Toro. You can fly here or drive and leave your car in safekeeping and take the ferry. Islands of the Pearl Island Archipelago including Contadora Island Panama's Pearl Islands are famous as the site for 2003 and 2004 CBS Survivor SeriesJust a 15 minute plane ride or short boat ride from Panama City, the Pearl Islands offer beauty, seclusion, excellent fishing, diving and snorkeling. In colonial times, the Spanish found thousands of pearls on these isles including the 31 carat, 400 year old Peregrina pearl now owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Lodging options include an all-inclusive resort and the lovely small beach retreats Punta Galeon and Hacienda del Mar. Islands of the San Blas Archipelago- a Kuna Indian Reservation A 45 minute plane ride from Panama City lies the San Blas Islands which offer not only idyllic island settings, but also a chance to see the living Indian culture of the Kuna Indians. Accomodations are simple and it is recommended that you go with a tour operator to make the most of this unique experience.
