But they end up not having more then a dime to spend, and use that and some of the things the store workers give them for free, to make their mother the best birthday present ever. The age level for this book would be around 5-8 years of age. A lesson this book teaches is its the thought that counts. Meaning, you dont have to buy your mother, (or anyone else) the most expensive gift. You should just get, or make, whatever you are able to, and know that the person will love it just because you thought of them. I thought this was a good book for younger children to read.See less

One pair is human, and the other pair is bear!. As they proceed up opposite sides of rolling hill covered in blueberries, each member of the species copies the other: The moms focus on the task at hand, remembering the harsh winter ahead; the children ("Little Sal" and "Little Bear") focus on the immediate pleasures of eating blueberries--so much so, that each gets lost. In a deftly portrayed switch, McCloskey shows the Little Bear following Little Sal's mom, and Little Sal following the Little Bear's mom. How can you not feel lovely and peacefully sleepy with prose like "I took the moon for a walk last night, it followed behind like a still Summer kite, though there wasn't a tail or a string in sight, when I took the moon for a walk." And my favorite, "...and the moon called the dew so the grass seemed to weep, when I took the moon for a walk." You should see the images on that page. Beautiful. All three of our daughters have loved this book (almost as much as me.) Highly recommend.See less

The story becomes more sophisticated as it progresses. The narrators questions about birds open an exploration into more abstract, organic concepts about the natural environment: If birds made marks with their tail feathers when they flew, think what the sky would look like, for example. At the storys end, the now-visible narrator, having imagined herself as a bird throughout the book, is back at her window, singing. "Why are you sitting in a box?" reads the opening page, opposite an image of a small rabbit, drawn in the simplest, unshaded lines, who appears next to a square. "It's not a box," reads the text, presumably in the rabbit's defiant voice, on the next page, and equally simple red lines overlay the black-lined rabbit and box to show a speeding roadster. In the following spreads, the questioner (a clueless adult?) continues to ask about the rabbit's plans, while the little voice answers with the book's protest of a title. This owes a large debt to Crockett Johnson's Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955). She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave.
