Local Train Station: Shin-Shimashima From Tokyo: From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu shinkansen line to Nagano. At Nagano. change to the Nagano Dentetsu line and go to Yudanaka (express trains run almost every hour). Make sure the train goes all the way to Yudanaka station as some trains only go as far as Nakano. From the Yudanaka station, take a public bus toward Kanbayashi onsen and get off in the last stop. You'll need to then walk about 30 minutes to the ryokan. Travel Time: 3H Travel Time: Tokyo Station to Nagano, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Located in what was once a private mansion, Hanaya is made up of some ten buildings connected by a web of enclosed pathways (almost hallways) that meander through the ryokan's vast gardens. Architecturally, Hanaya is representative of a pure, traditional Japanese style of building. Of interest to families and couples, fourteen of its forty-three rooms have private hot spring baths attached to them. The area of Bessho Onsen is full of shrines and temples (many designated 'National Treasures' by the Japanese Government). Bessho Onsen has also been used as the backdrop for numerous classics of Japanese literature. We recommend taking advantage of the area by exploring more than the hot springs. The trail between Magome and Tsumago is a well maintained section of the former Nakasendo, the route that ran along the Kiso Valley and connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. The trail is not difficult and is well marked in English and Japanese. It is about 8 km long and should take two to three hours to complete at a leisurely pace. The trail leads through the countryside and passes right alongside the houses and fields of local residents. Unfortunately, the trail also intersects with the highway and hikers must tread along tarmac for some portions. Despite this, a walk along the Magome-Tsumago trail is a highly enjoyable part of visiting the Kiso Valley. A baggage forwarding service is available through the towns' tourist information centers. Luggage must be dropped off at the information center before 11:30am and will be delivered to the other town's information center by 1:00pm. A fee of 500 yen is charged per item.
