(12/06/11) The Emerson EM237C headset is pretty good during the time I use it. I can drive in my car and the other party wouldn't be able to tell. Well, it ends rather quickly, a good 11 months. I think the battery inside of it is getting weaker and won't even power up the headset after like half hour of use on the conference call. It's time to shop for a new one, and I buy this again. ...See less

(12/06/11) Add this reviewer to the list of people who hold Paradise Lost up to the lofty title of The Greatest Epic Poem in the English Language; it is not only this, but one of the best in any language. Writing unabashedly in the tradition of unrhymed Homeric epic verse, Mitlon was working well within what was earlier purveyed by Homer, Virgil, and Dante -- but he brings his own distinctive touch and flair to the work. The opening lines of the long poem are clearly inspired by Homer, as are other elements, but Milton has a very unique poetic style; long sentences, often with the principle verb at the end, being one of its mainstays. This language is very grandiose and quite complex; it takes a while to get used to it -- you will have to pay very close attention during the first book -- but, as with most classical literature, once the reader gets the hang of it, it goes quite smoothly. The Divine Comedy of Dante has a more towring reputation than does Milton's Paradise Lost -- for one thing, it...See less

(12/06/11) This was the Tallis Scholars' first recording devoted to their namesake composer--and it remains one of the best Tallis discs available. Its centerpiece is the famous Spem in alium for eight five-voice choirs. This is a spectacular piece, with voices entering one by one, leading to a sudden, crashing entry for all eight choirs. The choirs then toss pealing phrases back and forth (listen with headphones!) and finish with a monumental 40-voice chord. Other treats include the popular Pentecost motet Loquebantur variis linguis, two beautiful settings of the prayer Salvator mundi, and the 20-minute votive antiphon Gaude gloriosa, which has intricate imitative passages for three to four soloists alternating with vigorous writing for full choir. --Matthew WestphalSee less

(12/06/11) This 2-CD release is a combination of previous Tallis Scholars discs; alongside Palestrina's most famous work - the Missa Papae Marcelli - is another freely composed Mass (Brevis), 2 parody Masses and their respective motets (Assumpta est Maria; Sicut lilium), and also his setting of the Lamentations for Holy Saturday, Lesson 3 (6vv). Regarding historical accuracy, there are clearly several issues with these performances, perhaps most obviously in the use of sopranos as opposed to the original falsettists (or castrati). Similarly, in the papal choir - as was in fact the norm elsewhere in late 16th-century Europe - the alto parts would have been sung by high tenors, not countertenors. Recent Palestrina scholarship has also shown that one-per-part performance was likely; indeed, it was almost certainly the case in polyphony for Holy Week (such as the Lamentations), although the Tallis Scholars' 2-per-part allocation is considerably more plausible than choirs with a massive treble...See less

(06/16/08) The first sound of the day can be the cruelest. If it's not an obnoxious buzz or beep, it's a clock/radio spewing suicide bombings. Wouldn't you rather start the day with finely honed irony in a plummy British accent: "I am delighted you have survived another night. If you would allow a personal note, sir, may I add my own small congratulations to the roar of the world's approval? Thank you, sir." The voice is that of Stephen Fry, reprising his television role as P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves, the prototypical English butler. And he's built into the Voco clock. There are "nearly" 50 wake-up messages and a dozen different responses when you turn off the alarm. Jeeves will even run through a 90-second relaxation exercise, purring you to sleep. Veddy civilized. The clock looks like a miniaturized satire of classical architecture. It's shipped from the U.K. (where else?) for £25.95 plus £3.95 "post and packing" or £8.95 for overseas orders. The total cost in dollars is roughly $67.40 at current...See less
