Adam wrote, [F]or me, "knowing" Python means you understand how slices work, the difference between a list and a tuple, the syntax for defining a dictionary, that indenting thing you do for blocks, and all that. It's not about knowing that there is a sort() function. In Python, reinventing sort and split is like a C programmer starting a project by writing his own malloc. It just isn't something you see very often. Similarly, I just don't think you can credibly argue that a C programmer who doesn't know how to use malloc really knows C. At some level, libraries do matter. On the other hand, I wouldn't claim that you must know all eleventy jillion methods that the Java library exposes in one way or another to say you know Java. What is the middle ground here? I think the answer is something along the lines of, "you have to get enough practice actually using the language to be able to write... See less

In part, the bill permits surveillance without warrants on telephone calls and e-mails between the United States and foreign locations in which the foreign participant is suspected of terrorist links. As I was having trouble getting the VMWare MUI to work on Ubuntu, I came upon a bugzilla thread that solved my original problems, but made me very concerned about the Ubuntu developer team. The discussion highlights serious problems with their mentality, priorities, and attitude. The controversy centers around the default Bourne shell, /bin/sh, which executes scripts in Linux (expert readers may skip this paragraph and the next two). For as long as anyone remembers, Linux distros have provided GNU Bash, an “embrace and extend” version of the original sh (the behaviour of sh is actually standardised in POSIX 1003.2). So /bin/sh was a symlink to /bin/bash — yet bash has extensions that would not work in a standards-compliant sh. Since DesktopLinux.com's recently completed survey is a self-selected group, we can't claim scientific proof that the number of desktop Linux users has more than doubled in the past year. Still, this year's survey produced 38,500 votes versus 14,535 votes over the same number of days in a similar survey one year ago. Part of the increase undoubtedly was because this year's survey received front page coverage on both Digg and the German news site, Heise Online. That said, we've also seen an increased interest in Desktop Linux, based on our own website statistics. When that evening setting is combined with subjects that have artificial lighting, you get an image that is widely colorful and romantic, such as the Eiffel Tower. Downtown Nashville from the Gateway Bridge San Francisco at Night Timing is crucial for night photography—wait for the sky to become as brilliant as the subject so you can produce an evenly lit image. It all happened when XP suddenly froze for some reason. after rebooting, the device was dead - XPdetected it as a 0mb device (and attempted to format it as such - which didn’t work) After a little research I was able to revive the drive, and heres the procedure (pretty easy): * Download and install the HP Drive Key Boot Utility * Open the desktop icon and select the correct flash drive under device * Select the file system you want to format to (FAT, FAT32, NTFS) * Tick Quick Format * Click start Officially this software (HP Drive Key Boot Utility) is meant for HP disks, but unofficially it seems to work fine at formatting most flash media, even digital camera cards. I should be delighted at this recognition of the quality of my software, except that the ’software’ doesn’t even run. This is hardly surprising when you consider that it is just a text file with the words “this program does nothing at all” repeated a few times and then renamed as an .exe. The PAD file that described the software contains the description “This program does nothing at all”. The screenshot I submitted (below) was similarly blunt and to the point: Even the name of the software, “awardmestars”, was a bit of a giveaway. And yet it still won 16 ‘awards’. I have always steered junior programmers to TopCoder. The idea is that the speed of competition can stimulate faster learning. Even if they don't compete, the practice areas are just plain good practice. Project Euler also offers up a big set of small programming challenges. Just the thing to play with on the lunch break. Another good site is Dave Thomas' CodeKata blog. I really like the idea presented by Dave. Take a problem per week. Create a different solution (read implementation) each day of the week.
