(11/16/10) Although of course you can't see the sunshine in the picture because in order to see a rainbow the sun has to be behind you - but believe me, it's there. When I was a kid there was this giant paper rainbow in my room. It was pretty realistic, and I remember trying to figure out exactly where one color stopped and the next one started. If only someone had told me that the colors aren't really in clear-cut bands like that because they're really just a continual spectrum, I could have saved a lot of time and been even more of an annoying pedantic jerk than I already was. What I didn't know was that Isaac Newton who was famous for doing lots of things, looked at a rainbow and said "HeyOMG! I see five colors." Then everyone said five? That's weird because things are supposed to happen in sevens. Only a crazy freak would say there are five colors in a rainbow. And we kill freaks because it's the olden days. And he said "What? I said seven. Seven colors." So! The text says "Quantization of...See less

(11/16/10) If you're awesome, you know that coffee's heavenly taste comes from a perfect balance of acids - aliphatic, chlorogenic, and alicyclic carboxylic acids and phenolic acids, and sweet roasted carbohydrates in the form of mono and polysaccharides and sucrose, and alkaloids. Hundreds of different individual chemicals! The combinations of which depend mostly on the roast, skill of the roaster, and even the kind of brewing pot you use. The bottom line is, your coffee mug is full of chemistry, so why are you sipping your bitter black brew from a simple and boring ceramic mug? Where's your science, man? Step up to the big leagues, and drink deeply from your very own 400ml laboratory beaker! The glass handle keeps your dainty fingers from burning, while the graduated markings on the side proclaim this to be a vessel of science. Not vessel as in starship, you know - vessel as in container... but why wax synonymic when I could be making a second cup of coffee?See less

(11/16/10) Celebrate a friendship with someone with whom you pair well by giving your friend one side of the pair and keeping the other. Genes are written in DNA and RNA molecules using a code of chemical units called bases. These bases form pairs, which is critical to their function. In DNA, A (adenine) pairs with T (thymine) and G (guanine) pairs with C (cytosine). In RNA, G pairs with C and A pairs with U (uracil). The charms are based on shapes of the base molecules. They are strung onto a chain at the place where they would normally connect to the sugar-phosphate backbone. This set of two necklaces comes with your choice of A-T, A-U, or G-C. Please let me know what one you'd like when ordering. If not specified, I'll send a set of my choice. The charms are about 3/4 inches long, are made with high-quality reclaimed/recycled sterling silver, and strung on a 16 in sterling silver snake chain. These come in pretty, recycled gift boxes and include an informational card about the molecules.See less

(11/16/10) Most folks never realize how cute microbes can be when expanded 1,000,000 times and then fashioned into cuddly plush. Until now, that is. Keep one on your desktop to remind yourself that there is an "invisible" universe out there filled with very small things that can do incredible damage to much bigger things. Then go and wash your hands. Lather, rinse, repeat. Your choice of (see additional images for pics of each): * Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) In ur envelope - closing ur government agency * Bad Breath - Halitosis (Porphorymonas gingivalis) Oral malodor is no laughing matter. But don't give spicy foods all the credit. Microbes deserve their share of the glory, too. Make someone smile (as long as they've brushed first.) * Beer Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Come and get it! This microbe is a baker, and a brewer -- and a scientist to boot. Pretty amazing!
