Not only is the craft easy to make, it also adds a lovely design element to your child's room -- and they're inexpensive to boot. Woo! The items you'll need to make the pinwheels are: * Various pieces of paper * Scissors * Push-pin or Pins* * Pencils with erasers What makes your pinwheels look fabulous is the paper you use. We love to use Japanese, bookbinding and handmade papers which look much snazzier than your average construction paper. Our very good friend is a bookbinder, so we are fortunate to get all of her paper scraps for crafts. However, singles sheets of nice patterned paper are usually inexpensive. Places like the Paper Source often sell baggies filled with a variety of usable paper scraps as well. 1. To begin your pinwheel, cut your paper into squares. Earlier this year a group of families from the school we moved to, invited us to go camping with them in August. I've always thought of camping as an activity meant for people who are not me. To me, camping with kids seems like the exact opposite of a "vacation." But then you see I am quite into hanging out with other families, so I was caught in a dilemma. In the end, I decided the kids should get to try camping and we, adults, should get to know other families at our school better and spend more time with the ones we know already. So, camping it is. My little boy and I had a camping-test-run in May at an overnight camping event with his Cub Scout group. This little experiment was, kind of a disaster. It turns out tents are not automatically water proof and even a short camping outing, at a site without running water, requires more than just a bag of supplies. I was incredibly under-prepared. Now while I generally try to avoid foods with artificial colors, I make exceptions several times a year for holidays and birthdays. I did make “brown velvet” cupcakes for my son’s first birthday, though, when an attempt to use natural red dye turned out unsuccessful. (Apparently natural dyes rarely hold up to baking.) Frankly, I hadn’t even thought of the chemicals in Easter egg dye until seeing this Slashfood mention of an article from Plenty on DIY, non-toxic egg dyes. I’ll probably still go with convenience this year - especially when the boy isn’t even a big egg eater - but we will use our cage-free, hormone-free, vegetarian-fed eggs, at least. And maybe I’ll try this some year when I have a little more time! Happy Easter! See less

Well you can browse them by category, but who doesn’t love a good quiz? Answer a bunch of questions about your preschool-aged child and get recommended activities. The one I’m excited about today is “Fun with melting ice.” * Take a small plastic toy, place in freezable container (I’ll be using a ziploc bag) and fill with water. You can use a dixie cup or something like that. * Freeze the pouch of water. * At bathtime, give treasure-filled ice blob to your child. * Watch how long it takes for the ice to melt away so the child can get to the toy. We were recently treated to homemade butter at a friend's house and it was the best thing we'd tasted in ages (the raspberry muffin it rode in on may have helped, too). It never occurred to us to make butter, but apparently it's super easy and a great kitchen project to try with kids. We found plenty of online resources for making butter and they all focus on one thing: shaking your groove thing. That's right, making butter involves lots of shaking which is really fun for kids. It can be tiring so the more kids you have on hand to share shaking duties the better. (If you're in a hurry, you can always use a food processor, but really now where's the fun in that?) Even with all of the holiday festivities and snow fun I still managed to make a felt board for Seth. I’m so proud of myself. I’ve been meaning to do this for about a year now and am happy to say - mission accomplished! Here’s the how to if your interested: Materials * Large frame, including a back panel - I used one with a roughly 16×20 opening * Felt for background - a little larger than opening * Adhesive - I used a spray photo mount * Rotary cutter * Cutting board * Straight edge - optional * Newspaper Steps * Remove glass from frame - reserve for another project (coasters? a pendant?) * Cut background felt a little larger than back panel of frame. Several of you wrote in saying "start simple." Melissa's camping hack keeps everyone close to home: My favorite camping tips? Camp in the backyard. Three years ago there were three of us were pregnant and as an extended family, we felt it would be easier to camp in Grandma and Grandma’s backyard than head into the great outdoors. We had a firebox for making s’mores, pitched our tents on the lawn, had a “midnight movie” (see attached picture), and a flashlight treasure hunt with goodies from the dollar store. We made the screen from PVC pipe, two elbows and two “T’s”, rebar pounded into the ground to hold it upright and a twin sheet sewn top edge to bottom edge and slipped on to the PVC frame. I was caught short the other day when it started bucketing down with rain and I could not imagine anything less appealing than taking the kids to the playground. So what could I do to keep them busy and stop them from going crazy being locked in a flat for a whole day? I had run out of play dough, read all the books I could read and had already exhausted the crayon option… Then I suddenly remembered my mother making us potato stamps when we were kids! It was an instant hit. Half a potato and some rough carving later produced a stamp that fit perfectly into my daughter’s hand, and she and her friend spent hours stamping every possible piece of paper I could find!
