We are doing our best to recycle or donate anything that is not coming with us on moving day. There is one thing we’ve been holding onto that not even our animal shelter will take: old pillows. I am not a pillow expert. All I knew about pillows before today is that you’re supposed to change them regularly because of dust mites. (Yuck I saw that Oprah show.) During my research on how to recycle old pillows (make dog beds) I discovered that there are many eco-friendly pillows to choose from. The cool thing about eco-friendly pillows is that they are made from renewable resources and last much longer than cotton, polyester, and down filled ones (the kind I’m sending to the dump because there seems no alternative-sewing machine is packed). The uncool thing is the price. The investment for a full family will be substantial. Even the kiddy pillows are pricey. Hillary tells us: For Oscar's room I started with his choice of color, green - and then his love of vintage campers and trailers and all things VW for his duvet cover. I really wanted to make a room he could grow with that wasn't too theme-y and that wouldn't need another "big boy" redo in a year. The twin size bed is from IKEA and the charming duvet was handmade by Hillary. A real work of art. The built-ins (not permanently built-in) and shutters were vestiges from the previous owners of the house. Hillary painted them and covered the top with faux boix contact paper. She re-invented the shutters by using flannel fabric that was the lining of a vintage boy scout sleeping bag found at the thrift store. Talent runs in the family. This book... See less

Regardless of how you perceive it, it’s an investment one way or another. The bottom line is, your baby spends 10-16 hours a day face down on it. So there is some serious merit to wanting to eliminate any potential hazard your baby could be breathing. Traditional baby mattresses are covered in vinyl, (pvc) which in many cases contain phthalates to soften the material. That’s just the surface. Inside that mattress is polyurethane foam (hello Volatile Organic Compounds) which are then treated with PBDEs to add flame resistance to an otherwise highly flammable material. PBDEs (Poly brominated diphenyl ether) levels have been increasing in the past decade and who wants an infant breathing a potentially toxic substance? Reader Molly H had a good tip in a recent Open Thread: I don't want to spark another debate here about bright colours being stimulating for babies vs neutral colours being appealing to adults, but... while shopping at Target last week i saw in their 'college dorm' section a set of interlocking foam mats (like the alphabet puzzle piece ones you commonly see in very bright colours) in neutrals tan & dark gray as well as a bright, vibrant pink. $25 gets you 20 12x12" pieces. Maybe not quite as exciting as the Skip-Hop mats, but definitely more affordable. I heart the plain tan set, but since the tiles are blank, I imagine those of you who are more crafty could even do some sort of stenciling/painting to liven up the mats if you were so inclined. Good thought, Molly H.! We do really like the Skip Hop Playspot tiles, but the Connect-A-Mats are considerably cheaper at around $20 compared to $70.
