I have sealed the wood with a special technique that if you should dent or scratch it lightly you can sand it and polish with lemon oil. Makes it must nicer than having to refinish the whole thing. He has safety eyes and a cheery smile that I hand embroidered with rayon thread for a little bit of sheen. my octopi are machine washable (with your delicates please!) and laid flat on a towel to dry. although the eyes are very securely fastened, I wouldn't leave an infant alone with him just in case the baby tried to swallow a leg or something similarly tragic.
