(12/28/07) The first recording by Masami Akita for Quasi Pop. Here's 3 long pieces on “Peace For Animals” full of ice-breaking analogue feedbacks over dense overdrived textures, some beasty, pulsing rhythmic elements on the background and rollercoaster's LFO spazmes of analogue synth. This is the bright example of modern “post-analogue-post-laptop era” sound of Merzbow: these compositions are wild at heart as the wild nature is, but they're certainly could be friendly to whom who wants to be friendly to beasts. As many others Merzbow's records, this CD is dedicated to wildlife and it's calling to fight for the animals rights. Don't send animals to war! Meat is murder! Fur is murder! Peace for Animals! Noise for the rest of us!See less

(12/28/07) On June 25, Portland sound artist Daniel Menche rescued a Chihuahua dodging cars on a busy Oregon street. It was the day before Menche's blog, What Does Blood Sound Like?, turned a year old. It was also the last day the blog belonged to Menche. In six weeks time, Menche has posted 13 photos of the dog, now named Knuckles. Knuckles has blogged twice, lamenting that his new caretaker is "El Loco." "This Menche went to the store and bought some dog food and actually asked the cashier 'What do Chihuahuas eat?' and the store cashier responded 'Dog shit, you dumb shit,'" the Chihuahua reports. Knuckles has his own blog, too, and he's been the source of debate on anthropomorphism and anthropomorphobia. Blood readers were enticed to a Portland gig with the promise that Knuckles would be there, and Spanish electroacoustic pioneer Francisco Lopez even drew his portrait. On July 21, Menche posted a photo of Knuckles riding on his left shoulder under the subject "We are a team..." It's this...See less

(12/28/07) "(zoophorus), n. - sculptured relief frieze, with a continuous pattern, of men or animals." In some ways this scrap of information on the inner sleeve of Merzbow's latest release helps the listener, but in some ways it further baffles. There's the idea of sculpture, of being presented with a wall (of stone or noise); an impenetrable surface on which the artist has made incremental marks. The idea of patterned repetition too: Zophorus is a curiously tailchasing set. Loops play their parts, as piledriving sub-bass tones and frantic teethgrinding squalls in the higher spectrum. But there are plenty of loose, flying ends; agonised feedback howls and chatters that tail away to nothing. The repetition is really at a deeper level, in the sense that over the course of the five parts into which Merzbow breaks Zophorus, he returns to the same territory again and again, worrying over the same ideas. Each piece begins with a sense of return, as though whatever ideas he is working through are...See less

(12/28/07) In 2004 Fracisco Lopez took part in the Brussels Sonic Matter project. The participants made field recordings of the streets and spaces of the city, which Lopez has now "mutated, composed, recorded and mastered" into a single 73 minute piece, Untitled #164. The grainy textures produced by Lopez from the materials efface any of the common signifiers of urban field recordings, be he still creates an uncanny and unlikely sense of place. It eases it's way slowly into earshot with a series of depth charge booms, muffled and reverberating, which powerfully sugest an illusory spacce or architecture. Windy gusts of low-frequency sound begin to predominate and, unusually for Lopez, some rhythmic punctuation is audible in the form of impatient tapping. Lopez enters similar territory for much of "Untitled Sonic Microorganisms", part of a two disc set under the banner of his Absolute Noise Ensemble. Guitar recordings collected between 1992 and 2003 from 32 contributors (Elliott Sharp, Oren...See less

(12/28/07) Take one of two discs recorded in May 2005, Senmaida (chinese for "one thousand rice paddies"), for example. Starting with a low rumble, and a clattering like a metal ball bouncing around inside a washing machine, the pullulating noise enviroment of the 19 minute opening track is gradually overtaken by chirping, screaming insectoid caterwauling; later, one that must be marvelous to experience live (and if the frequent analogies to washing machines in Merzbow reviews get on your nerves, go stand against one while it's in use, and see how good it feels). Elsewhere, Akita makes delectable ripping noises that brings to mind guitarist Erik Brann's solo on Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vita," or slows the rythm down to a near-reggae lope, while the industrial onslaught becomes even harsher. This is some glorious noise - physically engulfing, psychically challenging - and when you get right down to it, totally out of it's own tradition. Don't believe me? Look up Luigi Russolo's 1913 tract,...See less

(12/28/07) One of the current (and very deserving) hot topics on the American solo noise dude front, Daniel Menche is absolutely on fire with Flaming Tongues. Take the untitled second track for instance, where incinerated walls of destructed sound writhe from chanel to chanel as Menche's rather ethereal and beautiful approach to harsh noise folds in on itself with delay, over and over, constantly mutating slowly toward another radical juxtaposition. Much of these kinds of impressions surface to mind because Menche's approach to creating noise is reductive and ordered, rather than chaotic and destructive. Where many seek to be freewheeling and disordered, Menche seeks to find some sort of metaphysical root within his sounds, making them as much a study in process as one in erosion. Though he often uses his voice as an instrument (involving a sort of amplified stick he places up to his throat), Flaming Tongues is a wholly instrumental affair that explores harsh alien soundscapes with the confident...See less

(12/28/07) There are certain definite things in life: the rising sun, rush hour crushes, insane radio and TV presenters and bad hollywood remakes of excellent Japanese horror films. You may also add to this list 'Turmeric' a new Merzbow boxset that's a bit noisy. Four CDs in a rather splendid embossed silver-on-white slipcase and a fifth disc (also the best) available as a limited edition from Blossoming Noise's website all contribute to the ever-growing catalog of this master craftsman. There's no denying that Masami Akita is anything short of genius when it comes to the creation and manipulation of noise and these five discs only strengthen the case. But surely he's getting bored of such compositions; he can create this sort of output standing on his head by now. Is it because he is a master of his art that it appears an easy task to create such bizarre works of cacophony? 'Turmeric' is exactly what you'd expect from Merzbow: hideous squealling feedback, low drones, sharp high end and the...See less

(04/10/07) Happy is very proud to announce Ephemeral, the new album by Morioka, Japans Naoko Sasaki, otherwise known as Piana. Following 2003s critically acclaimed Snow Bird (almost 3000 cds shipped worldwide) Ephemeral takes Pianas sound into a new, more acoustic, terrain. Shedding some of the glitch aesthetics that made Snow Bird a genre-defying micro-pop release, Ephemeral shows Pianas strength as a songwriter and arranger, and a master of her electronic and acoustic art. A recent interview conducted with Piana describes the thought processes behind Ephemeral: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It is clear that despite her success with her first release, Piana was not content to simply release another Snow Bird. "Another approach to ultimate situations, nearly stillness before becoming silent as Samuel Beckett taught us. End Game. Microtones and structures are only the tools. The Night Of Lead revisited..." Asmus Tietchens' first released his unique electronic music in 1980, but created works since the late 1960s. Since then he has produced over 37 full length solo works and more cutting edge recordings on numerous international labels dealing with electronic sound and conctrete music. Some of his over 20 full length collaborationive projects include the ongoing Kontakt der Junglinge with Thomas Koner. (04/10/07) LINE is proud to present the latest full length project by German sound/video/installation artist Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto). Nicolai (b.1965, Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany) fuses sight and sound in minimal installations and sculptures. His work suggests the atmosphere of an alchemist's laboratory where sound is converted into frequencies, pitches, pops and pulses. Working outside the bounds of representation and art history, he often composes arrangements using signal tones and the sounds of communication data. These arrangements are released under the name alva noto in the music field where he is also known. Prior to working with sound, he originally studied landscape design. His performances and installation works have been shown in museums and galleries around the world including recently at the Tate Modern (London, UK), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), YCAM (Yamaguchi, Japan). 1. counter - for elfriede jelinek - 2005 2. transit -for suchan kinoshita - 2005 3. station remo - for tvpow...See less

(04/10/07) Levels (Inverted) was commissioned as part of the city wide Found Sound exhibit. This six-channel site specific sound installation was exhibited October 15-November 19, 2005 at the 1515 Arts Building within the three story concrete stairwell. The sounds utilized are based on site recordings of the space and towering central flourescent lighting fixture itself. Thick white audio wires draped down from the ceiling and small speakers adhered to the glass panelled staircase. Due to the spiral shape of the staircase and the speakers positioning (pointing towards the center of the space) different levels and interactions of frequencies surfaced within the space as the glass panes acted as conduits for the lower frequency bands. Although no recording could quite capture the full physical and visual experience of being in the space with its lights and the viewer/listeners own movement choice, this recording is not meant to be a completed "composition" but rather a stereo approximation of an...See less

(04/10/07) LINE is proud to present the first full length collaboration by Richard Chartier and Taylor Deupree since 1999's Spec. (12k). For this collaboration, sound artists Richard Chartier and Taylor Deupree were invited by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC, to create a new live work inspired by the Seascapes series of renowned Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto on the occasion of his retrospective exhibition. The result is this live recording, Specification.Fifteen. This work premiered on March 30, 2006 in front of the curved panoramic window of the Museum¹s Lerner Room as the sun set across the city¹s skyline. Specification.Fifteen evokes the stillness and opposing yet related spaces of Sugimoto¹s Seascapes, which suggest infinitesimal change and variation under a seemingly uniform surface. Water and air. (04/10/07) Stage is Steinbrüchel's second full-length solo release on LINE. The album contains 10 scenes that move between warm organic and melodic digitalised sounds and cold crystalline-like sparks. The sounds and compositions are even more detailed and have a more melodic approach then previous recordings by Steinbrüchel. Single isolated and stretched tones are structured together with smaller loops and particles of clicks and noises into dense atmospheres. Parts of the sounds used in several scenes are based on piano recordings by Bernd Schurer and/or guitar recordings by Tomas Korber. For the first time Steinbrüchel has used and processed recordings of acoustical instruments to this extent in his compositions. Stage brings to life once again a collection of precise and carefully composed structures and textures, which are formed into different scenes where they all interweave with each other. All the tracks were composed in 2005 for the interactive dance performance HYBRIDOME, produced by...See less

(04/10/07) LINE is proud to present Intermission/Six Feuilles by artist Tomas Phillips. This work was created out of the desire to wed acoustic and digital instrumentation in a particular compositional field, one that allows room for (a)tonal and silent gestures alike. Piano and ³koto² are accompanied by the shifting texture of physically manipulated organic materials, in combination with minimal electronics whose function is to engage rather than to counter the non-digital elements. More than an homage to Morton Feldman, the title is a direct reference to his own series of ³Intermissions,² from which Intermission|Six Feuilles draws much of its decisiveness and inspiration. Tomas Phillips (b. 1969) is a composer, novelist and teacher whose sound work focuses on improv performance and minimalist through-composition. He began composing electronic music in the early 1990s, releasing limited edition cd-rs under such monikers as Sea Optic, Lisbon and Eto Ami (with Dean King) and has since created...See less

(04/10/07) LINE is proud to announce the release of its first DVD, Camera Lucida. The project by Russian/American installation and video artists, Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in Japan, Germany, Russia and Belgium, Camera Lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the Sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. The authors of the installation, Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this DVD. This DVD also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works. Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand create sensory immersion environments that...See less

Working with his childhood acoustic piano and the accidental sounds of an imperfect recording environment, Kirschner first composed a simple, austere piano sketch to serve as raw material for the project. This sketch was then passed on to Deupree, who created three new compositions entirely out of sounds derived from Kirschners piece. The two then collaborated on editing the new recordings, which transform the original piano sketch into a diverse array of sounds both familiar and unexpected. Like their previous CD, post_piano 2 is released as an open source project, and the composers invite other artists to continue the interpretation and...See less

He explores the ideas of rotation in much of his music, utilizing repetition and overlapping, out of sync structures that create networks of hypnotic patterns. (04/10/07) In the summertime, in the woods of New York State, the midnight insects can be at once serene and deafeningly loud. A field recording of this din of nighttime creatures was the inspiration and base for 1am. Dense, and often aggressive, 1am is a powerful work that fuses many layers of both noise and melodic tracks over the field recording. The result, best played at high volumes, is like a high-volume equivalent of standing on the rocks outside of Deupree's home late in the summer night. Despite 1am's opaque and rich sound it is not unlike the 23-minute epic "Stil." from Deupree's Stil. cd (12k1020). It is unwavering and highly repetitious but with enormous amounts of textural and timbral shifting. 1am is a very experimental and reactionary piece for Deupree, created in a week's time, and emotionally charged. It is limited to only 500 copies.See less

It is label that time and time again has not been afraid to release debut albums from new artists, drawing on the new energy they interject into both the scene and the label. With the release of Blueprints, 12k presents 2 tracks each from 6 artists new to its roster and showcases some of the new sounds and influences that will carry the label into its 10th year (2007). Caught between the organic and electronic minimalism that 12k is known for and the unconventional Japanese pop musings and songwriting style of Happy, Moskitoos Drape is an infectously strange, bleepy, and dreamy debut release.
