(02/11/08) Reviewer: JUDITH from MI | After my son had chewed through two cardboard books in his stroller I finally found the Selecta wooden books and instantly loved them. He loves the colorful pictures, I love pointing out the words to him and they are completely unchewable. | Was this review helpful to you?See less

(07/10/07) Other reviewers have already made note of this but it is worth repeating: Kohn is seriously misinformed about the empirical studies that have been conducted within education and psychology to address the motivation issues he writes about. While it is true that under particularly contrived and artificial conditions there may be a detrimental effect on a person's motivation to engage in an activity if some form of "reward" is dangled, such as when a non-preferred trinket is promised to someone for engaging in an already preferred activity, there is a wealth of peer-reviewed studies showing the beneficial effects of rewards when positive consequences are properly arranged following specific behavior. What Kohn primarily proposes as support for the detrimental effects of rewards comes from misinterpretations of well established learning principles in a small number of studies. As an analogy, can you imagine someone like Kohn denouncing the practice of medicine as being universally bad...See less

(07/10/07) In struggling to deal with my strong-willed 4-year-old daughter, I kept upping the ante, usually by yelling louder and coming up with more creative consequences. There were lots of "successes" but her outbursts at home seemed more desperate. Something in my gut said this just isn't working -- like I was getting her compliance at the expense of her self-esteem. I read Unconditional Parenting and the subtle concerns I had were in this book. Besides providing the history of time-outs, the author provides insights on common North American parenting strategies (rewards, punishments, "say, 'I'm sorry, Billy'", "say, 'Thank you'", "Ooo, what a pretty picture"), then provides a common sense look at who kids really are and what's behind our current style. Here was the seed for how I could guide my daughter without trying to manipulate her, and keep my respect and love for her intact. And I was shocked as it inadvertently explained the origin of issues I'm facing as an adult and the parenting I...See less

(06/18/07) I have two children, the first of whom suffered greatly from traditional Western pediatric approaches. Every time anything was wrong, he would be prescribed yet another dose of antibiotics and sent on his way with little or no "preventative" or "alternative" methods ever discussed, let alone prescribed. This book represents a MAJOR milestone in the treatment of infants and young children. It emphasizes a healthful, holistic and homeopathic approach toward dealing with the complex issues of children's health. I believe the treatments that are revealed by the ultra-imformed Dr Feder will become a new "status quo" for a country (US) that is drowning in antibiotics and misinformation. Thank you Dr Feder for providing us with a new blue print for developing a healthful and informed attitude toward the treatment of childhood ailments and creating a life of wellness and happiness! (06/18/07) To the poster who said that the book is not full of good info...maybe we wouldn't need a common sense book to tell us how to parent if we would all learn to listen to our instincts. So many parents have gotten so good at ignoring them because that is what all the "experts" tell them to do. If nothing else, my hope is that this common sense book reminds parents why we were given instincts when it comes to parenting and I truly hope that this book is totally unecessary very soon---it would mean that we all finally "get it" when it comes to parenting. Yes, it's common sense, but it by no means is how the majority of people parent in our current society! Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(06/18/07) I have read and studied a lot of psychological theories and models. Most of them are quite complex and take some time to learn a new vocabulary and understand the semantics of it. I started reading Rosenburg's book in the middle. It is the most readable book on self-awareness I have ever read. He makes his process of Nonviolent Communication very accessable right in this small book. His real-life example stories make it easy to connect to his teaching. He really knows how to communicate and it shows in this book. I plan to buy more copies and give away as gifts, not something I tend to do. This book is a gold-mine for *any* relationship. Co-workers, friends, spouses, children, bosses, enemies, family...I believe what we all want so dearly in this day and age is real human contact and we are not getting it in many of our relationships. This book can help empower us to get the human contact we long for, and the other person will get what they want too. I admire Mr. Rosenburg's wisdom and...See less
