(11/25/07) Everyone knows by now the problems that Clarkson has had with this disc -- well, the problems the hire ups have had with letting Clarkson have her own voice on record. But this is nothing new. In the world of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Clarkson had the guts to tinker with what worked. A poppy, melody written style that sucked in everyone who had ears. Did the change do her good? Yes-yes-yes. Is her album perfect? No. Who has made a perfect album? Not a dang soul out there. What makes this album work so well. Is that Clarkson is TRYING!!!! Trying so hard not to be some cookie, cutter waif, with bleach blonde hair, kohl rimmed eyes, and a snarky attitude. The woman has substance. Songs like "Sober," with it's build up to an almost necessary rant is just plain talent!!! The disc pops with tracks that show a woman in transition. The contemplative "Irvine" with its hollow melody and Patty Griffin like simplicity is marvelous and Clarkson can drudge out a sour note like no other...See less

(11/25/07) When Michelle Branch released her major label debut, "Spirit Room", in 2001, I accorded it a four-star rating not so much because of the quality of that album, but because of the potential I saw is this young artist. While catchy, the songs of "Spirit Room" didn't grab all that strongly. The quality of the album was more like a 3 or 3 1/2 star rating. Yet, as I said, I saw enormous potential and gave a higher rating based on that. Michelle's sophomore effort, "Hotel Paper", has more than justified that faith. While grant this album four stars as well, this rating is based completely on the merits of the album, itself. "Hotel Paper" establishes and more mature presence by Michelle both lyrically and musically. The edgy "Are You Happy Now?" (with an assist from a brief 10 second intro) kicks this album off in grand style. It reaches its apex with Michelle's soaring vocals and wonderful musicianship on the amazing "Breathe". In between, she manages to hit strongly with excellent songs...See less

(11/25/07) I have her 2 previous releases, and I like them both very much. Her 3rd album is one of those "same but different" type of deals. I say this in a very positive way. If you enjoy her music in the past, I think you'll be pleased with this. I read a review and saw someone state Target and walmart only carry the edited version. This is not true in Targets case. I think one of the reasons I enjoy Avril's tunes are the use of the electric guitar , especially in the chorus of many tunes. Puts me in mind a little of Joan Jett. A few of the tracks made me think of Blink 182. And there was one track (sorry, typing from memory and don't remember name), where I swear I picked up a slight guitar sound from an 80's track. I always enjoyed the more rocker type female artists of the 80's (I'm 33, I know, kind of weird), and Avril kind of takes me back, her stuff is catchy, it rocks pretty good, and for the most part light listening.
