Whether it has been unjustly ignored, unfairly lauded, or misunderstood in some fundamental way, we aim with On Second Thought to provide a fresh look at albums that need it. I will begin this personally. Don’t worry, I won’t remain there long. Early in life I found myself more or less uninterested in the female voice. I liked bands, male vocalists—mainly rappers, really—and found most women singers rather tiresome. Then I began to listen to jazz. St. Vincent recently released “The Strangers,” the first track from her upcoming sophomore album Actor. The song seems like a logical step from her great debut debut album Marry Me, which was her first solo album after spending time with both the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens. “The Strangers” has a four on the floor bass drum pulse with her laissez-faire orchestration that is layered with her omnipresent guitar noodling. Her voice (which sounds like Jenny Lewis at times) is echoed at parts and is as striking as ever. The lyrics are seemingly downtrodden and are occasionally juxtaposed with her singing “make the black hole blacker.” Like most of her songs, I can’t tell if it really is a sad song or not, but either way, it’s interesting and makes me excited to hear more from her next record. Why might that be? One possible explanation: Divas are of slightly odd apparition, both in behaviour as well as in their looks. Something doesn't seem quite right about them. Occasionally, it makes you laugh. It's just like, you know, similar to the phenomenon when you feel a little bit beside yourself. Because of its political implications, I hesitate to use the word "queer" but it is an expression explaining my personal condition in regard to the post-postmodern age (an age which I simply describe as hyperinformatism).
