The service was lead by the heterai and the Eleusinian Arkhontes, and began with the preparation of a banquet that honors Demeter's bounty and the fertility aspect of Dionysus with pudenda- and phallus-shaped cakes. After the preliminary feast, the magistrates departed, and the heterai held a second rite that consisted of copious wine consumption, ritual symbolic fornication, and formal offerings of incense, grain, and cakes to sacred statues of the deities and to clay images of genitalia. Finally, the magistrates and priests were permitted to rejoin the ritual. A Priest and Priestess bore torches that symbolize Demeter and her daughter Persephone presided over the final ceremony, which culminated in the ultimate celebration of fertility: an orgy that lasted til dawn. (12/08/07) Is there a style of music the Violent Femmes can’t master, an instrument they can’t utilise? Is there anything the Femmes have released that is not 100% first class, studio album or recorded live? My problem is selecting which CD to play. This CD has made that an even more difficult choice. How can three men be so talented? It’s simply not fair. This CD yet again demonstrates the Femmes ability to arrive at a venue, feel out the audience and play up to them. I can only suggest one thing better than a Femmes live CDs. Even if you are not a concertgoer, even if the Violent Femmes are the only ones you ever see live, make the effort as the Violent Femmes are in a class of their own.See less

(12/08/07) I bought this as an anniversary present for my wife after researching what that blasted song was she kept singing from the Old Navy commercial (it's "The Way I Am", from this album). Turns out just about every song on this album is as catchy and poignant. My daughter (20 mos.) is constantly singing "breakable, breakable, breakable..." from "Breakable". What's best is how authentic it is. Nothing sounds over produced, or tailored to a focus group like so many other currently popular, young, female singers. You can tell Ingrid is singing these songs, in the way she does, because they are about who she is, how she thinks, and what she wants to say. Truly a great album.See less
