This is the lecture every parent should give their adolescent, and with Orman's emphatic delivery, it certainly has a lecture-like feel. It serves as a beautiful illustration of the kind of baggage we all walk around with, that there would be a drive to do an artistic piece as a formal confession, and then mail it anonymously to a stranger. Some are touching, some are humorous. Others are disturbing. Some are staggeringly painful, such as people holding on to stories of being victimized that haunt them daily, or others from people who still blame themselves for things that happened decades ago, whether it was their fault or not. What we see are people not just feeling guilty about things they've done, but just as often feeling guilty about their feelings. "I'm jealous of her baby." Or the vegetarian who confesses that they "think of meat from time to time." In a similar vein we get "I don't care about recycling. (but i pretend i do.)" Journalist Russell Hokes travels there to profile the brave and honest citizens who are struggling to save their community. Well, sort of. Actually, Wigfield is not so much a town as a series of ramshackle strip clubs and used-auto-parts stores, lacking any kind of civic infrastructure whatsoever. And its people are not so much "brave and honest" as "brutal," "homicidal," and "lacking any redeeming virtue whatsoever." Similarly, to call Hokes, who narrates his own struggles to gather accumulate 50,000 words, a "journalist" is at best an exaggeration and at worst an abomination against the institution of journalism itself. While I still prefer his in-person standup persona, Naked Pictures of Famous People is, well, funny. The beauty of Stewart's humor is his intelligence, especially in the age of Tom Green, The Man Show, and TV Funhouse. It's comedy for those of us who got over laughing at someone getting hit in the nuts round about puberty. This book reemphasizes his intelligence and wit. I'd reccomend it for anyone who is a fan of smart comedy. If you're a Tom Green fan, probably stay away -though in that case, you probably wouldn't be browsing the editorial reviews on Amazon.com anyway. As a narrator, Garrison's style is unobtrusive and understated; she reads with expression, drawing the listener into the story, but she does not create memorable character voices or give a "flashy" performance. She uses one basic voice for the protagonists of each story, and clearly differentiates between the main character and the supporting characters. The result is a narration that steps back and lets the author's words take center stage. Bridges, meanwhile, is excellent in his narration of the one tale from a male point of view-he does a great job voicing the drunk young men at a bachelor party, the Bronx-accented stripper who entertains the guest of honor, the one conflicted young man among them trying to decide whether to propose to his longtime girlfriend and the sensible girlfriend... The story is narrated by Astrid - a teenage girl - who suffers through years of living in the foster care system while her mother Ingrid serves a life sentence for murdering her ex-lover. (I can just envision a younger Angelina Jolie-type playing the role of Astrid in the film version.) Each family that Astrid lives with has its own unique (yet sometimes cliched) cast of characters that are instrumental in shaping and transforming the young woman she becomes. This is a novel of self discovery the hard way. I personally cannot imagine the loneliness and terror that Astrid experienced while bouncing from home to home to home.
