The Opel Flextreme is a diesel plug-in hybrid concept car created by General Motors. It can travel 55 kilometres (34 mi) on its lithium-ion battery before a small diesel engine starts charging the battery (it is a series hybrid). The Flextreme uses the same platform and technology as the Chevrolet Volt. In January 2008, a rebadged version of the concept was introduced at the North American International Auto Show as the Saturn Flextreme.[1] In order to expand on different ways of recharging the battery on the GM E-Flex platform, GM created the Cadillac Provoq to recharge itself using a hydrogen fuel cell, in addition to the onboard gasoline, E85, and diesel engines found in the other concepts. The Opel Corsa Hybrid concept will be presented by GM at the upcoming IAA motor show in Frankfurt next month. Equipped with a tiny 1.3-liter CDTI ecoFLEX diesel engine, mated to GM's new hybrid system with belt-alternator starter technology and getting extra power from a lithium-ion battery, the car consumes only 3.75 liters (1 gallon) of diesel fuel per 100 km (62 miles) and emits only 99 g/km of CO2. The Opel Corsa Hybrid concept switches off its diesel engine when the car is stopped, and restarts it when the brake pedal is released again. The onboard Li-Ion battery is recharged with the help of regenerative braking when the vehicle's kinetic energy is transformed into electricity. I don't really like the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa family of small hatchbacks (they are really small for my height) but nevertheless hope that the diesel/hybrid technology used here will soon cross the species barrier and arrive to larger vehicles. In the '90s, California passed strict emission controls that restricted the amount of sulfur a car could emit. As a result, diesel manufacturers curbed sales to California and the U.S. in general. Since then, petroleum manufacturers have devised cleaner diesels that only emit about 15 parts per million of diesel, down from hundreds of parts per million. That satisfies the California law. Manufacturers, meanwhile, have come out with more efficient and powerful diesel engines that get 20 to 40 percent better mileage than their older cars. This catalytic converter features the world's first innovative system using the reductive reaction of ammonia generated within the catalytic converter to "detoxify" nitrogen oxide (NOx) by turning it into harmless nitrogen (N2). In 1999 the company became the first major car manufacturer to launch a hybrid in the U.S., the Insight, and it has been a leader in developing fuel-efficient -- and peppy -- engines. But in recent years, archrival Toyota Motor Corp. (TM ) has stolen the green mantle from Honda with its popular Prius and other hybrids. Now Honda is trying to take it back. Its technology of choice: the stinky old diesel engine. Or make that a not-so-stinky new diesel. By 2009, Honda plans to sell "clean diesels" in the U.S. These cars will likely go some 30% farther per gallon than gasoline models. In Geneva the engine will be presented as a part of drive-train only but it is expected to be fitted to the new Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles in 2008.
