While companies like Canon and FujiFilm prefer to fly in the face of PMA and announce their cameras well ahead of the trade show, others, like Leica, have decided to hold their cards 'till the last minute and show off 'em at the show itself. Leica's latest offering, however, shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with the company, with the camera maker once again sharing the spotlight with Panasonic, unveiling its take on the Lumix DMC-FX30 in the form of the C-LUX 2. Apart from the spiffy new design, however, the two cameras are otherwise identical, with the same wide-angle lens with a 3.6x optical zoom, 7.2 megapixel CCD, 2.5-inch LCD, and 848x480, 30fps movie capturing capabilities. Leica has also seen fit to throw in an oh so generous 64MB SD card, as well as a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements. The camera, like Sony's previous DSC-G2, will make use of Memory Sticks but the sheer size of the built in storage - combined with its 2.7" touchscreen and extensive in-camera organization and editing features - relegate removable media to back-up status. A successor to the existing D-LUX 2 model, the Leica D-LUX 3 is based on Panasonic's Lumix DMC-LX2 digital camera. The D-LUX 3 couples a ten megapixel imager with the same Leica-branded 4x optical zoom lens with MEGA O.I.S. image stabilisation used in the original camera. The lens yields effective focal lengths from 28 - 112mm - a useful wide angle to a moderate telephoto. There are differences between the Panasonic and Leica versions beyond the nametag, however. Images can be previewed or reviewed on a 2.8" wide LCD display with a better than average resolution of 207,000 pixels, but there's unfortunately no optical viewfinder - something which is sadly becoming rather rare on a lot of digicams these days. Focusing is catered for with a 1, 3, or 9-point autofocus function with AF assist lamp. Changes between the two models are mostly in terms of the product bundle, where Leica's variant ships with a 64MB Secure Digital card while Panasonic does not include a card, and Leica includes Adobe's Photoshop Elements 5.0 software in place of the ArcSoft bundle provided by Panasonic. The camera body is essentially identical other than product logos, and the absence of the oval trim piece on the front of the Panasonic which serves to provide a grip for your fingers. Yeah, mobile phones have been status symbols and fashion accessories for some time now, but the concept of a designer's name taking top billing in the product name is a fairly recent development. If Gucci really does have a handset baking in the oven, we're guessing the Italian icon isn't doing the heavy lifting of the development all by its lonesome, though we haven't an inkling who might be involved. Heck, we can't even really make out what kind of form factor we have going on here, and all we've got is this one lonely pic up on flickr to go by.
