(11/07/09) From AudioFile Pure joy and enchantment are the best ways to describe Paul Coelho's mystical novel of a Spanish shepherd boy seeking his destiny. In that same spirit narrator Yareli Arizmendi spins this marvelous tale of exotic adventure. The tale ranges from the countryside of Spain to the glittering oasis of the Egyptian desert. Arizmendi makes us feel the pain and joy of Santiago, the poor shepherd boy, as he tries to decide whether to seek a larger fortune or stay in the security of his job. Exuding softness and pathos, the narrator reminds that us most people who are unhappy failed to follow their dreams when young. I.Z. (10/18/09) What critics think: Children's Literature Review: This book was interesting and enjoyable, although the story was not as exciting or suspenseful as the first. The first book was more imaginative, creating a new society with awesome tech toys. This book is more philosophical, showing how beauty changes us and affects others. Even in a world with no wars or violence, there are still problems, but hope lies within the human spirit. I recommend this book for people in middle school. (10/11/09) About the book: Description: Kaeleigh and Raeanne are the twin daughters of a district-court judge and a politician mother. They are identical in almost every way, but each girl has dark secrets. The bestselling author of "Crank" gives voice to victims of childhood sexual abuse, in a moving and disturbing novel. What critics think: Children's Literature Review: Told in non-rhyming verse, the narration of this story alternates between the voices of identical twins, Kaeleigh and Raeanne, who, on the surface, live what appears to be a good and privileged life in California. They are the daughters of a father who is a district court judge and a mother who is a politician. The girls recall a time not long ago when their parents appeared to be in love with each other, but that was before an awful auto accident that changed their lives. After the accident, their mother doesn't seem to have the capacity to love anyone. She is constantly on the road electioneering, coming home, it seems, only...See less
