As a medical anthropologist, this book opened my eyes to the need for cultural competence. As a human being, this book showed me that every person has a story and that my duty is to be as empathic and nonjudgmental as possible. You never know whose life is in your hands.

This is next on my "to buy" list. I'll let you know once I finish it- Thanks for the recommendation!

I loved this book. I read it very quickly. The author has a such a gift with language. You might check out her other work of non-fiction, Ex Libris, which is devoted to her love of books and reading.

This book will resonate within me for many years. I even gave it as a Christmas gift to friends a couple years ago. Allende's previous novels were wrapped in magical realism, and in this memoir, she gives the historical details for many of her works. I can't possibly describe the impact Allende has on you when reading this book.

Although not an anthropologist, Lanyon approaches her search for Malinche using ethnographic methods, including interviews with local peoples and researching historical documents. She travels the Mayan countryside exploring long forgotten, hidden cities that may or may not have figured prominently in Malinche's pre-Cortes history. She takes time to listen to folk tales and analyzes these for the possible truths they may be. With a couple of informants, she could spend a little more time interviewing them, eliciting their explanations and knowledge in some cases instead of interjecting her own, but otherwise, she is adept at listening to the people and their stories. She writes in a confessional style, which brings to life her own interest in Malinche and interweaves Malinche's story with her own.

I first heard about this book a couple years ago on the Today show. At first it was hard to take a Today show book club selection seriously, but then I decided to listen to what the star author had to say about the book. Isabel Allende introduced Three Day Road, and her enthusiasm for the story really intrigued me. She writes in a completely different genre (magical realism) from what she decribed this book to be (WWI historical fiction), so I thought I should give it a shot. And I decided to wait until it came out on paperback, and boy do I wish I had read this earlier. What an amazing story!! It's one of those books I could hardly wait to get into bed to read each night.

For a debut author, Joseph Boyden is an incredible story teller. He manages to weave several stories into one, paralleling them at the right moments so it amazingly doesn't seem forced or unfocused. I know just enough about Indian story telling to feel that Boyden honestly captures Amerindian culture and thought, and he also captures the horror and honesty of war, including drug addiction, trench warfare, the cruelty of seasons, and the level of spirituality those can receive and achieve from suffering in such horrid conditions in a way few writers can.

I don't know how Garcia Marquez does it, but he makes you feel like it takes 100 years to read this book and then you don't want it to end when it does. The generations are cyclical and magical and all too parallel the Latin American fight for and against dictatorship.

I have tried to read this book 3 times. How long until you "got into it"?

This person is Kaboodle A-List!

I just kept at it, reading it little by little and somehow it captured me. you're right, it's not an easy to love read, but I have to say that at the end, I was sad to put it down and the imagery has kept with me several years after I last read it. If you "want" to like magical realism, what about Isabel Allende's House of the Spirits?

The first time I read this in 2000/2001, Robbins was able to explain the crisis between Jews, Muslims, and Christians that have plagued the world for centuries. Finally, I actually got it. Then I reread it last year, and I was in awe of his story telling--he pushes the limits of sexuality with humor, crudeness with lust, art with religion. He is a truly amazing writer!!

It's great, isn't it?

I read this in during a time of my life that felt most disorganized, chaotic, and out of control. My mom gave me this book, and I thought it would just be about physically organizing my home, but instead, it's actually about organizing yourself mentally and emotionally then physically. The author takes you on a step by step process of imagining and reflecting on why you are the way you are--why you are always late or why you impulse buy or why you can't seem to find your keys. Through reflection, you are able to organize yourself internally and then begin the challenging but completely doable process of clearing and organizing your living space. It also has a helpful section about moving, which happens to be a timely project for me (my husband and I are moving cross-country in a few months). I plan on giving this to all my friends!
