Shallow Hal, their smartly conceived romance starring Jack Black and a fat-suited Gwyneth Paltrow, scores with a soundtrack album conceptually driven by strong-willed, full-hearted women's song--Shelby Lynne's "Wall in Your Heart," PJ Harvey's "Good Fortune," Rosie's "Afterlife." Kingpin may have given Jonathan Richman a brief cameo, but the singer-songwriter remained curiously absent from that film's alterna-rock soundtrack. Luckily, the Farrelly brothers' There's Something About Mary has Richman everywhere--he's graduated into actually becoming a plot device with his simple ditties and ubiquitous appearances. The soundtrack is no different. Tracks by the Dandy Warhols, the Push Stars, and the Lemonheads set the pop tone for this compilation, with highlights coming from Ivy, Ben Lee, and the Propellerheads. The best cuts come from Richman himself, though, with three outstanding originals: "True Love Is Not Nice," "Let Her Go into the Darkness," and the title track. This is one of those perfect albums full of inspired precision playing that sounds tossed off with an intoxicating sense of ease and does nothing to dispel the dizzying feeling that this is some pretty great jazz, by any genre or time period (and these guys helped invent this sound back in the early 1960s). Brazilian singer Nara Leão was known as the muse of bossa nova, a woman who both nurtured and participated in the emerging bossa nova movement of 1960s Brazil. In her teenage years Leão was at the center of a circle of musicians that congregated at her parents' apartment in Rio de Janeiro. Later on, she would help launch the careers of numerous bossa nova songwriters, including Chico Buarque, with whom she shared a weekly television show. Nara '67 collects 23 Portuguese-language recordings that Leão made in 1967, a pivotal year in Leão’s career that found her becoming increasingly critical of the Brazilian military junta that nearly framed her for dissidence the year before. And while some of the songs on Nara '67 qualify as protest songs, the overall character of the album is peaceful and gentle. Whether savored as a drink or devoured in solid form, chocolate is an abiding passion with many people, lifting their moods even as it expands their waistlines. The chances are that this album was born of a can't-miss marketing conceit but the musical choices make for a very tasty if surprisingly low-key listen. The tunes are uniformly acoustic and mellow, with just enough of a percussive swing to keep things from getting too static. Teresa Bright's harmonies sometimes recall a Hawaiian-style Andrews Sisters impression and Marcantonio's North-Eastern-flavored Brazilian track is fluid and lovely. But when Beethova Obas warns his embattled Haitian countrymen about the dangers of selfishness, it's obvious that he isn't talking about anything so trivial as sharing a candy bar. In fact, given the nationalities involved, the material is generally less topical than might be expected. However, the music often reflects the replete euphoria of cocoa-fuelled sugar shock. --Christina Roden See less
