The insulation is outstanding, as our logs are about 6" thick on average, making the R value very good starting out. We insulate between the logs with wire and insulation, then chink with our own special mixture of mortar and cement, making a very authentic look and weather-tight seal. We can supply the raw beams for you to finish, or we can recommend a woodworker who can complete the mantle to your specifications. As shown here, this hand-hewn Chestnut Mantle retains all the character and patina of age. Our faux wood beams will not have excessive twisting, bowing or shrinking when installed correctly. Box beams weigh considerably less than solid barn beam or ceiling beam. They are easier and safer to install. The lightness of box beams will lessen the stress to your structure. You will not have to strengthen your ceiling to have the timber look. You can also hide electrical, pipes, and more inside false barn beams, or old ceiling beams leaving a cleaner finished look. Centre Mills Antique Floors, has been in the business of rescuing wood from old American structures that are destined for demolition for almost a quarter of a century. The small crossroads of Centre Mills, Pennsylvania is nestled in the rolling hills in the heart of South Central PA near the historic town of Gettysburg. John Longanecker, owner of Centre Mills Antique Floors, uses the old gristmill in Centre Mills, built in 1841, as a storage facility. The wood he saves comes from the unique barns, houses, mills and outbuildings built by the early PA settlers in the early 18th and 19th centuries. Early pioneers used the wood that was on the site to build their structures, so that over the years Longanecker has rescued a unique collection of oak, pine chestnut and fir. Previously the wood was felled by hand, cut, worked and hewn by hand. Longanecker has learned to appreciate and marvel at the mastery and the ingenuity of the earlier American builder.... See less
