Just prior to the completion of their first album, Charlie Wilson cited the song for his brothers, thinking they might ridicule the lyric. His brothers loved it though, and the song was a smash number four single on the R&B charts, elevating the group to national status. Born and raised in Tulsa, OK, the Wilson brothers began singing and playing in their father's Pentecostal church, and it was also mandatory they practice their music lessons at home as well. They learned various instruments which primarily included the piano. As much as they despised the lessons at the time, it proved to be a value tool for all three. With Ronnie being the oldest, he established his own band by the age of 14. Charlie, a few years younger, joined a rival band a couple of years later. I bought Rock Swings, because I wanted to see how a legend like Paul Anka would sing these rock and pop and songs from the 80s and 90s. I loved the song selection on this album. My favorite track is his cover of the Eric Clapton's song Tears in Heaven. I think he sings this song about pain and loss beautifully. Another highlight track on this CD is BlackHole Sun. The piano playing by Mike Lang on this track are so good. The bass guitar playing on the track Hello is so smooth and subtle. It gives the song a very romantic tone. His vocals on the song Everybody Hurts is very soothing. I really liked it. Smells like Teen Spirit is another one of my favorites on this CD. I can finally understand the words to this song now. The trumpet playing by Charlie Davis and trombone playing by Steve Higgins are very good on this track. They give this song a very upbeat sound that I really liked. You just have to love the concept here: aging crooner takes up metal with his own, shall we say unique, stylings. I have listened extensively to Shatner and Nimoy sing. I have heard all the Golden Throats CDs (and love them all.) I even have listened to an album called "The Wit and Wisdom of Spiro Agnew." (Really.) But nothing prepared me for this. From the leather studded album cover with regulation glint in the eye, to the funny, yet ponderous liner notes, to the songs themselves, this is a masterwork of some sort. What sort, exactly, I'm not sure, but it demands to be listened to. I guess this should be obvious, but if you are a metal fan hoping to hear a generic cover version of some of your metal and hard rock favorites, this CD is not for you. If you want to laugh until your sides hurt, it most definitely is. Standouts here include Metallica's "Enter Sandman", the seminal power rock anthem "Stairway to Heaven", and a stab at Hendrix with "Wind Cries Mary." All these are great,... See less

Deluxe editions, the music industry's equivalent of the DVD director's cut, have been a gamble for years, extending an album's life span while risking erosion of loyalty among earlier buyers. Reviewers often allude to the "60s" when writing about Neil Sedaka but that can conjure up images of stringy-haired protesters and riots. That is not what Sedaka is about. His joyful tunes started before that time and unfortunately ended (until the mid-70s) just as the British invasion came. Both "Run Samson Run" and its flipside "You Mean Everything to Me" got lots of airplay in the early 60s. Besides the other even bigger hits on this CD, Mister Sedaka wrote songs for other artists ("Another Sleepless Night", Jimmy Clanton, comes to mind). Thankfully, he was rediscovered in 1975. Most recently (note the date), he performed here and got a great reception and review. If only he'd do it more often. Cherish this CD; it's worth the bucks. It's great to have Neil Sedaka's breakthrough comeback album in release again after nearly three decades. Along with four bonus tracks, "Sedaka's Back" was a 1974 compilation of early-'70s British recordings Neil had made with the gents who would go on to become the band "10cc" (remember "I'm Not in Love" and "The Things We Do for Love"?), as well as new songs recorded in L.A. An early-'74 introduction to Elton John would lead Neil to convince Elton to add him to John's newly-founded Rocket Records, and the rest is history. "Laughter in the Rain" would be released in late '74, take its sweet time crawling up the charts, and eventually hit #1 on Billboard and become one of the biggest hits of 1975. Neil Sedaka was truly back, indeed. Elton composed a melody of three of Neil's classics, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", "Laughter in the Rain", and "Calendar Girl", and made a beautiful tribute to Neil. David Foster took the stage saluting Neil, before introducing his protégé, Renee Olstead, who did an amazing rendition of "Should've Never Let You Go", with David accompanying her on piano. The Captain and Tennille followed with "Love Will Keep Us Together". Toni Tennille, sounding as wonderful as she did when "Love Will Keep Us Together" first peaked in 1975, told the audience, "Without Neil, there would be no "Captain and Tennille". Living Legends, Sage Francis, Brother Ali, Felt (featuring members of Living Legends and Atmosphere), Cage, Mr. Lif, Grouch & Eligh, Hangar 18, Blueprint and Lucky I Am round out the first bill of the Paid Dues Independent Hip-Hop touring festival. The Paid Dues tour stems from last March’s Paid Dues Music festival in Southern Cailfornia. The Living Legends crew is a family of independent hip-hop creators. From primary earth bases in Los Angeles and Oakland, the Legends extend worldwide and beyond. It all started with BFAP (now known as Sunspot Jonz) and PSC (Luckyiam), who laid claim to the name of Mystik Journeymen in the early 1990s. By '94 they were locally legendary for throwing Underground Survivors shows, houseparty style at their loft - 4001 San Leandro Street in East Oakland. That's where the Grouch hooked up with the Journeymen in 1995, just before they took off on their renowned first European tour. Around the same time in the southern part of the state, Mid-city Los Angeles to be exact, 3 Melancholy Gypsys (Murs, Scarub & Eligh) were part of the almost mythic Log Cabin crew going back to 1993.
