Several important considerations when selecting your reusable bags to purchase:
1. Durability - Decide if you plan to use them for wet swimsuits at the beach, dirty gym clothes, or a haul from the grocery store. If the first two are your main uses, a tote that can carry 10 pounds will be all you need, however if you're looking to lug heavy gear or cans, bottles and heavy produce, be sure to invest in bags that hold at least 40 pounds each. You don't want seams popping with the price of groceries these days.
2. Style - It does no good if it holds a ton but you're embarrassed to be seen with it. Be sure to pick a style that suits your personality - colorful, monotone, mellow, bold... you're much more likely to use them if you LOVE them!
3. Long Handles - Some tote bags have short handles and can only be carried over a wrist or in your hands... at some point, you'll want the ease of tossing it over your shoulder, so be sure the handles are long enough.
4. Water resistant/Waterproof - Especially with groceries that are prone to condensation, or wet swimsuits, you don't need them leaking so every piece of furniture and your car seat get soaked - make sure they're waterproof or water resistant to ensure the best ease of use.
5. Flat vs. Gusset - Some people prefer bags that roll up or fold up as flat as possible, however these usually don't offer the "gusset" necessary to help it stand up when stacking groceries inside. It's your choice, however be aware there are 2 different styles, and if you can stack efficiently without the gusset, you'll love how tiny and compact the bags can be without the added bulk.
6. Price - remember, you get what you pay for. For a decent, durable, stylish reusable bag, expect to pay $5-$9 each... especially if you buy them in bulk pouches. It's worth the price because you'll be using them for years.
Here are some great options for durable, waterproof, stylish bags in this price range. The EnV and RuMe are gussetted, and the Envirosax are not. Happy shopping!
