Navy might be more versatile, but the dark purple can still work in lots of ways, is a hot fall color right now, and adds some a bit more pop and flair vs basic navy. I'm loving purple this year, so I may be a bit bias. :)

This color reminds me of the shine in Katy Perry's hair. Although I don't like her music, I love her style. This jacket is awesome!
