The more I learn about what goes in to making all the wonderful items I love to buy, the less attractive some of them seem.  Rather, the $10 shirt I was so glad to find makes me feel guilty later when I realize it was probably made with cotton full of pesticides which do so much damage to the environment.  I've made an effort to green my purchases as much as possible, but sometimes I'm too tempted, or there isn't any better choice available to me.  But I've found just changing the way I think about my purchases has helped me save a lot of money if I ask myself about the ecological impact of each item before I purchase it.  "Is this organic?"  "Is if fair trade?"  "Is this really a safe item to use?"  Instead of buying on a whim, I stop and do the research to find these things out.  I'm not always successful, I give in plenty of times, in the face of an irresistible sale, or that caffeine or chocolate addiction I haven't managed to kick.  But I am starting to change for the better I think.  I still have a ways to go, but I am determined to get to that elusive goal of treading lightly on the earth.
