Twenty-one years ago we had the roof removed from our ranch style house and added a second story.
We made this into an apartment for my parents. They lived there very happily until my Dad died five years ago.
Two years ago, my Mom's health forced her to move downstairs with us. Then last March as her health deteriorated we were forced to have her move to a nursing home. She
had many health problems including Alzheimer's disease. I kept hoping an instant cure might be developed so I didn't change anything in her apartment or her room downstairs.A couple of weeks ago she died.
Most of my house was filled with memories of Mom and Dad, but I was finding it difficult to cope with the house staying the same and both of them gone. So we took some retirement money and went to work on half of our second floor.
What used to be my parents' bedroom/ office and part of the back storage room was changed to a large family room. We took out maroon carpet, knocked down a wall, and painted everything.
Here is the result. We had natural vertical prefinished bamboo flooring installed. We painted the celing a dark gray, and the two long walls a blue-violet tone. Eventually each end wall (one is already finished as you can see in the pictures) will have "messy" multi-colored stripes. I am making curtains using yellow and white striped sateen fabric.
In the bottom picture, you might barely see me peeking out the bathroom door.
I am hoping some of you will recognize the inspiration for our messy striped art wall. Let me know if you do....here's a hint...bunches of you have this item on one of your lists. BUT you are more likely to have it on a list if you are a mom, especially of children six and younger.
This room is now 34 feet long and 8 to 10 feet wide...depending on where you are in the room. I really want comments...don't be afraid to give an honest opinion of the art wall. If you can't figure it out, drop me a note and I will divulge my inspiration! This redo is helping my family and I feel comfortable in our house despite our loss.

A fellow kaboodler needs your help. Vera found this lovely coat on a photosite and she WANTS THIS COAT!!! But she hasn't been able to find it anywhere. She did find the gloves.

I sent an email to the customer service at the site where she found the pic, but they don't work on weekends....and it may take some time for them to get back to me. They may not even be able to tell us where the coat was purchased.

Kaboodlers are style experts. You know your stuff. I will post the link so you can get a better picture of the coat. Hopefully if enough of us look at our favorite sites or recognize the style of the designer who made the coat, we can find it for Vera.

Does anybody know of a way you can put up a picture online and find matching pictures??? I can't be the first one to have the idea and this would make it all so simple. Tech people, does such a wonderful program exist??

Okay everybody...this should be fun. Hide and seek...find the hidden treasure...first one wins the title of Fastest, Best Finder of Items A Fellow Kaboodler Needs....bestowed by Vera and I. Now this doesn't mean anything officially, but won't YOU feel good, if you're the first to find it?  Happy Searching...one, two, three, GO!

The Shack (Paperback)
A few weeks ago the pastor of my church mentioned a book he had read recently. Then he suggested we all might want to read it and he'd be happy to chat with us about it if anyone was so inclined. I thought right away there must be something very unusual about this book because it is the first time in over twenty years I can remember Father Charles suggesting a book for us to read.

Of course, he piqued my curiousity. I went right out, bought it and read it. And understood why he would recommend it.

If you haven't heard of this book, "The Shack", you will be hearing lots more about it soon. It is at the top of many best sellers list. When I looked it up online, ironically I found a link sending me to Kaboodle to see what all of us were saying about it. I know many Kaboodlers have added it to their own book lists.

The Shack is a very sad story about a family who loses a child in the most horrendous way. But the focus is on what happens to the father of the child afterward, how he deals with his guilt, his sadness, his inability to move on with his life.....and the way he eventually finds peace.

It seems such a simple book at first. But there are levels beyond levels beyond levels of allegory and significant comments on philosophy, religion, spirituality, and the meaning of life. You can't go much deeper in an exploration of humanity than this book does.

I had so many mixed feelings as I read the book. Sometimes I wasn't even sure WHY it brought out some of those feelings. I experienced anger, frustration, fear, joy, hope, inspiration and awe all in a four hour read. This is definitely a book you need to read more than once to begin to understand.

So now that I have experienced "The Shack", I want to hear from others who have read it. Was it just another book? Does it have the potential to change a life? Why are so many people rushing to read this book and passing it on as soon as they finish?? Is there another book you have read you would like to recommend?? Looking forward to all your comments.

Sassy Study Style~
Hi Fellow Kaboodlers,
The styleboard section of Kaboodle has really been getting a major workout lately. Two big contests....the Olay style contest, and the Back to School contests....have kept kaboodlers searching for the best picks, interesting themes, and the perfect layout style. And it shows!! I enjoy looking at all the amazing ways a particular theme can be pictured and expressed. I have also noticed a few questions that keep coming up and I thought I might try to address them in this blog. If I make any mistakes, I hope the K team will jump in and correct them.

First...many people seem unsure of how a winner for the contests is chosen. I know each person puts their all into making a styleboard and lots of hearts and comments is a great way to show how much we appreciate the art and the effort. BUT, winning has nothing to do with the style of any particular board or the number of hearts a person has acquired. Personally, I think that's good...soooo many are excellent...I know I could never pick.

So...how do they decide. At the end of the contest the winner will be picked in a RANDOM DRAWING from all eligible entrants. An eligible entrant for the Olay contest is one that a) entered through the official entrance site (with the orange decorations on the background) b) is at least thirteen years old and c) resides in the U.S. There will be one winner for the olay contest.

For the back to school contest there will be seven winners...one each week for six weeks and one grand prize winner when the contest is over. For this contest the winners will also be chosen RANDOMLY from eligible entrants. Eligible entrants must be at least thirteen and reside in the U.S.

You can make as many boards as you want for each contest, but you will only be entered ONCE in the Olay contest. In the back to school contest if you make a board each week according to the theme of the week...you will receive an entry for each week, plus an entry for the grand prize. For the back to school contest, the individual themes run from Friday to Friday.

Now you know what I know...which by the way, is always listed by the K team whenever a contest is held. So best of luck to all of you and....even if you can't win because you work for Kaboodle or you live someplace outside the US....make some styleboards to share with us anyone. Some of our very best styleboard artists....dianzz, for instance, are not eligible to win....but what a loss it would be if she chose not to show us what she can do with a computer and a background!

HERSHEY'S GIANT KISS
Shop unique, personalized...
Personalized Golden...

Today while browsing the web, I found a notice about the Hershey's on-line shop. Apparently the shop is closing and will only continue until July 31st. No reason was given for why Hershey's has decided to discontinue the site. The Hershey's online shop is fairly small offering two pages of Hershey goodies. But, boy oh boy, if you like chocolate, make sure you're wearing a bib when you look over the items available on these two pages.
Regular prices run from approximately eight dollars to around $100. Now....I saved the best for last...everything sold on this Hershey's site is 25% off throughout the month of July. If you want to share in this chocolatey goodness, make sure you read the caveats....such as when the last day is to order, how much shipping costs and how to ship in warm or hot weather. The Hershey shop is already out of some of the items they featured. They still have chocolate covered macadamia nuts though...mmm...mmmm...good....hope that's Hershey's. Say,  let me know if any of you Kaboodlers with a sweet tooth take part in this sell-off!

Fashion Meltography Fashion Meltography Fashion Meltography
Last week while looking around the web for anything interesting, I found a site with pictures made using a process called "meltography". Perhaps some of you Kaboodlers are already familiar with this type of photo art. I had never seen it before and I spent a little while just staring at it.

I still haven't decided if I like it or if it's just too freaky for my taste. It sure is interesting. I am leaning toward enjoying it . It is like a modern version of the old amusement park funhouse mirrors. Of course it involves much more advanced technology than a simple distorted mirror. I posted three examples with this blog. Take a look . I am really interested in hearing your comments. Thanks for reading my blog. Smiles...Paws72
