Preview based on a pre-production Pentax K10D Announced on September 14th 2006, just in time for Photokina 2006 the new K10D is Pentax's first forray into the serious-amateur digital SLR market. It's bigger, tougher and more feature rich than any Pentax digital SLR before it and it certainly carries a wide enough range of features to worry the 'big name' brands. Headline features include a stabilized ten megapixel CCD, high quality image processing pipeline, dust and weather proof seals, 11-point AF (with 9 cross-type points) and some unique exposure modes. A full detailed list of the top 20 features can be found below. It's clear that Pentax are targetting the likes of the Canon EOS 30D and Nikon D200, on paper it's a very strong contender, the proof however will be when we get to test a full production camera. The Canon PowerShot A700 ($350) is a low cost camera offering a 6X zoom lens in place of the 3X or 4X lenses usually found on cameras this size. While it's name makes it sound like the top-end camera in Canon's A-series, that's up for debate. While it does offer more zoom than the other models, it has less resolution and doesn't offer a rotating LCD display like the PowerShot A620. The Canon PowerShot A540 ($300) is a midrange digital camera that offers a 6 Megapixel CCD, 4X optical zoom (instead of the usual 3X), large 2.5" LCD display, full manual controls, and a VGA movie mode. The A540, along with its 5 Megapixel sibling, the A530, replace Canon's extremely popular A510 and A520 models from last year. Both cameras use Canon's DIGIC II image processor. There are a few differences between the A530 and A540 (besides the resolution) that are worth pointing out. The A530 has a 1.8" LCD, compared to the 2.5" screen on the A540. While the A540 can record movies at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second, the A530's frame rate is a sluggish 10 fps. The A540 has shutter and aperture priority modes, while the A530 only has a manual mode (where you set both the aperture and shutter speed).
